Ahead of this week’s Open golf Championship at Portrush, Spanish big-hitter Jon Rahm got ‘shirty’ at the press conference – when asked about his place on the 2025 Ryder Cup team.
Jon Rahm Gets Visibly Angry When Asked About The Ryder Cup
Two-time major winner, Jon Rahm, sat down for his standard Open-eve press conference on Wednesday, but after a string of question about this week’s Portrush major – the attention turned to the Ryder Cup later this year.
Rahm defected to the LIV Golf Tour in December 2023 in a mega-bucks deal – but as a result this put his Ryder Cup chances in doubt.
The former world number one is ranked just 19th on the Ryder Cup points list due to his lack of playing in qualifying events now he’s on the LIV Tour.
Meaning Rahm is not going to get into one of the six automatic Ryder Cup qualification slots. So will have to rely on a captain’s pick from Luke Donald.
Rahm never resigned from his DP World Tour membership so he could remain in contention for the Ryder Cup, which runs from September 26th-28th, 2025.
At first, it was believed that the former Masters winner would also just pay the fines dished out by the DP World Tour and sit out suspension for playing in LIV events.
However, Rahm has opted to appeal these sanctions, with fines currently still under arbitration.
If the case is heard between now and September, then Rahm and any other players could miss out on the Ryder Cup with having to serve suspensions that may overlap with the Ryder Cup.
When Asked About the Ryder Cup at the Recent Open Press Conference Jon Rahm Was Visible ‘Shirty’
“I don’t know how many times I can answer yes to that question”
“Yeah, it’s been on my mind. It’s been on my mind a year ago, and it will continue on my mind as long as I play golf in my career. So, the Ryder Cup is always there.
“Obviously when I wake up in the morning here, I’m thinking about this, but the Ryder Cup will always be on my mind.”
While in a recent PGA Championship interview Rahm said.
“That’s a question for Luke [Donald]. It’s his team. Hopefully I can qualify, and we don’t have to question it. I would like to think that personally I am, but it’s not up to me.”
With Donald responding by saying he’s had “zero conversations” with Rahm.
Rahm, who is yet to win the famous Claret Jug, is priced at 11/1 with the best golf betting sites in the UK for the Open.
With only Rory McIlroy (7/1) and Scottie Scheffler (6/1) ahead of him in the market.
