Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has backed Liverpool to retain their title in his Premier League predictions ahead of the 2025/26 season.
In conversation with Gary Lineker and Micah Richards on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer also named the top four and the three teams that would go down to the Championship.
Alan Shearer Makes Bold Premier League Predictions
The new season gets underway on Friday, with Liverpool hosting Bournemouth at Anfield. Liverpool are 19/10 favourites to win the Premier League with UK betting sites and are unsurprisingly a short price to kick off their campaign with a win.
Alan Shearer, who holds the record for most goals scored in the Premier League, agreed with the bookmakers and backed Liverpool for the title.
Alan Shearer Predicts Liverpool Will Win the Premier League
Gary Lineker, in his Premier League predictions, logically deduced why Liverpool would win the title in the 2025/26 season.
When asked if he differed, Alan Shearer replied:
“No, I’m with you. And I don’t think they’ll be finishing the window as well. I think they’ll still look for a player or two.“
“So yeah, I’m with you. I’ve got them for the title.”

Liverpool are leading the race to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. Magpies legend Shearer believes that getting Isak would effectively kill the title race.
Shearer added:

Arsenal
Alan Shearer backed Arsenal to challenge for the Premier League title, but predicted another runners-up finish.

He added:
“I still don’t think they may be finished yet in terms of bringing players in and certainly players going out.
“I’ve definitely got them in the Champions League, but I just don’t see them having enough to win the title. Just fall short.”
Chelsea
Alan Shearer started off by discussing Levi Colwill’s ACL injury and the impact it could have. He backed the Blues to sign a replacement, and there are suggestions that Marc Guehi is back on Chelsea’s radar.
Shearer added:
“They’ve lost Levi Colwill, haven’t they? That’s a big blow.
“I’d be amazed if they’re finished in the transfer window. You know what Chelsea are like. But I’ve got them Champions League definitely, but I don’t see them having enough to get to the title.”
Manchester City
Manchester City ended their four-year title streak with a fourth-place finish last season. Alan Shearer predicted they would improve, but not enough to snatch the title away from Liverpool.
On Man City, he added:

“I think Arsenal, Chelsea and City will all be playing for second place. I mean, by their ridiculously high standards, Man City, I don’t think last season was really poor.
“But they’ll be better, but I’m not sure they’ll have enough.”
Alan Shearer Says Burnley, Leeds United, and Sunderland Will Be Relegated in His Premier League Predictions
Burnley, Leeds United, and Sunderland have earned their place back in the Premier League. Alan Shearer, however, does not think they would survive the season.
Burnley
Burnley played excellent football last season to finish second in the Championship. Their defence was rock solid, with them conceding just 16 goals in 46 games.
Alan Shearer still thinks it would be a “miracle” if the Clarets managed to avoid relegation.
“If they do [avoid relegation], they might as well give him [Scott Parker] manager of the season already, because it’ll be a miracle if they stay up.
“I know they were super tight last year, giving off on the way, but I think it’s going to be very, as it always is for any team that’s been promoted, it’s going to be very difficult for them. I’ve got them being relegated, I’m afraid.”
Leeds United
Leeds United beat Burnley by the narrowest of margins to win the Championship last season. Micah Richards argued Leeds played good football, had a fine manager in Daniel Farke, and had an electrifying home ground at Elland Road. Alan Shearer agreed with Richards and said Leeds were the most likely of the promoted teams to stay up.

Shearer added on the Whites:
“I think out of the promoted clubs, I think Leeds will have the best chance of staying up. I think all of those reasons that Micah said, particularly the Elland Road factor, I think it would be absolutely bouncing there, and that could play a big part.
” I’ve probably got them relegation just, but if there’s one that can stay up, I think it’ll be them.”
Sunderland
Sunderland finished fourth in the Championship and qualified for the English top flight through play-offs. In his Premier League predictions, Alan Shearer said the Black Cats would struggle and would return to the Championship next season.
“Same as the other promoted teams, I think they’ll struggle, and it’ll be really tough for them.
“So I’ve got them being relegated again.”
Burnley, Leeds, and Sunderland were also predicted to be relegated in Rio Ferdinand’s Premier League predictions. It will be interesting to see if any of the teams manage to prove the Premier League legends wrong.
