Four-time world champions Germany will host lowly Luxembourg in their third 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday night.
Having opened their World Cup qualifying journey with a shock defeat to Slovakia, third-placed Germany must win their remaining matches and outscore Slovakia to win Group A. Finishing second would force Julian Nagelsmann’s side to take part in always unpredictable play-offs.
Germany vs Luxembourg Preview and Team News
Preview
After suffering consecutive UEFA Nation League A defeats to Portugal (2-1) and France (2-0), Germany travelled to Slovakia for their first World Cup qualifier in September.
The hosts delivered a stunning performance against the heavyweights to secure a 2-0 victory. It marked Germany’s first away defeat in the history of World Cup qualifying.
Julian Nagelsmann, however, did well to rally his troops against Northern Ireland. Only three days after the setback in Slovakia, Germany delivered a commanding performance, claiming a 3-1 victory over Northern Ireland. Serge Gnabry, Nadiem Amiri, and Florian Wirtz scored one goal each for Germany.

Luxembourg, meanwhile, sit plum last in Group A, having failed to score even a single point in the qualifiers. They opened their campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Northern Ireland at home.
On Matchday 2, they lost 1-0 to Slovakia at home, conceding the decisive goal in the 90th minute. Luxembourg were the better team in that game, as they had more shots on target (4 vs 2) and finished with a slightly higher xG (1.18 vs 1.14).

Team News
With Marc-Andre ter Stegen out injured, Oliver Baumann has been the preferred pick in goal. Baumann, however, is ill at the time of writing, and is a major doubt for the game. If he fails to report fit for the game, Alexander Nubel could guard the German goal on Friday.
As for Luxembourg, they can bring Seid Korac back into the fold after he missed the last game due to suspension.

Germany to Win – 1/20
Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany had a disastrous start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. However, they looked considerably sharper in their second outing and are heading into Friday’s match as overwhelming favourites.
Die Mannschaft have faced Luxembourg 12 times over the years, beating them on 11 occasions. In their last meeting, they claimed an emphatic 7-0 victory. There is a gulf in quality between the two
Nick Woltemade to Score – 4/5
Coming to goalscorers, we are backing Newcastle United newcomer Nick Woltemade to score against Luxembourg. Woltemade has been in scorching form for Newcastle lately, scoring a goal each in their last three outings.
He also chipped in with an assist in Germany’s 3-1 win over Northern Ireland last month. Between Luxembourg’s lackluster record and Woltemade’s scoring run, the outcome feels pretty obvious. Bookmakers
Total Goals Over 3.5 – 3/4
Germany have scored a whopping 50 goals in their 12 meetings with Luxembourg. Their last four meetings have produced 23 goals, with the lowest scoring clash producing four goals.
