Five-time major champion Rory McIlroy could be set for a permanent move back to the UK, with reports he and his family have no plans of living in America anymore.
This comes after McIlroy and his wife Erica Stoll were subject to lots of abuse at the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black last month.
Is Rory McIlroy Leaving America To Permanently Live In The UK?
After the abuse Rory McIlroy received from American fans at the Ryder Cup, speculation has been mounting that he might up sticks and move back to the UK permanently.
The Northern Irishman played a huge part in improving Team Europe’s Ryder Cup record when playing in America with a 15-13 victory at Bethpage Black.
However, after receiving non-stop abuse for the full three days of golf in New York, there has been talk of McIlroy and his wife Erica Stoll permanently leaving America and returning to the UK.
McIlroy bought a Wentworth mansion in Surrey over 18 months ago, officially moving into it earlier this year. However, the golf star still owns a residence in Jupiter, Florida.
With McIlroy born and raised in Northern Ireland, moving home or to somewhere else in the UK is easy. However, McIlroy’s wife Erica is American and from New York, so moving their entire family out of the US mightn’t be an easy task.
McIlroy was subject to an unwavering amount of vitriol from Team USA supporters at the 45th Ryder Cup, with his wife Erica also getting caught up in the chaos.
Here’s the full scene as Rory McIlroy’s wife Erica got hit with a beer (glanced off her hat) on Saturday afternoon.
Rory and Lowry had just won on 18 and he was coming back to 17 to cheer on the groups behind — and celebrate with Euro fans.

Erica was in fact struck on the head by someone throwing a drink in her direction, which the five-time major champion didn’t take too kindly to, as you’d imagine.
Given McIlroy’s treatment from US fans at the Ryder Cup and the incident with his wife Erica, their future living in America is somewhat in doubt.
After originally purchasing a Wentworth mansion for around £9-10m around 18 months ago, it looks like this could become McIlroy’s permanent residence going forward.

Rory McIlroy Purchases Wentworth Mansion
It was reported around 18 months ago that Rory McIlroy’s wife and he purchased a £9-10m mansion in the Wentworth area.
The property is said to be the pairs dream home, which has now been developed into their permanent residence. However, given McIlroy’s job as a golfer, the pair still spend a lot of time in the US.
Although the plan for McIlroy was to return to the UK in years to come when his golf career is perhaps on a downward spiral, that plan have have escalated somewhat after the abuse received at the Ryder Cup.
Both McIlroy and Erica were subject to verbal abuse from US golf fans at the 2025 Ryder Cup, which could be a reason for the McIlroy family to permanently move back to the UK.
Although the family have been living in their Surrey mansion when they can, they still spend a lot of time in America due to the PGA Tour schedule. However, that might not be the case for too much longer.
It remains to be seen whether the McIlroy’s will leave America for good, or if the career Grand Slam winner, his wife Eric and their daughter Poppy will continue to live in their Florida residence from time to time.
Will Rory McIlroy Continue To Play Golf On The PGA Tour In America?
With strong rumours that the Northern Irishman and his wife Erica Stoll could be set to leave America for good, some questions have been asked of how much golf the world number two will continue to play on the PGA Tour.
The 36-year-old does of course play several tournaments in Europe on the DP World Tour, but predominantly plays on the PGA Tour for most weeks of the year.
Three of the four majors championships are of course played in America, with all of the PGA Tour signature events also held across the US.
Although Rory McIlroy’s Ryder Cup record improved once again with 3.5 points from a possible five in New York, the abuse he received may well have put him off playing there week in, week out.

English golfer Eddie Pepperell has hinted that he feels McIlroy may well limit the amount of tournaments he plays in America, perhaps only participating in the majors and the eight signature PGA Tour events.
This could mean that the five-time major champion instead plays more on the DP World Tour, particularly at the tournaments in the UK and Ireland. After the abuse McIlroy received at the Ryder Cup, you couldn’t blame him either.
