Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford has been linked with a transfer to the Championship in January.
With a loan move the most likely outcome, Southampton have emerged as a possible destination for the 22-year-old.
Trafford, who only signed for City from Burnley in the summer, is eager to secure regular minutes after being frozen out at the Etihad.
The arrival of Italian superstar keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has pushed Trafford down the pecking order.
He’s not made a Premier League appearance sine August, with two EFL Cup ties his only game time.
Having arrived with the expectation of being City’s long-term goalkeeping solution, Trafford is now in a tough situation.
With the World Cup looming next summer, it’s thought he is now seeking a loan move in order to force his way into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

Southampton’s Goalkeeping Crisis Opens the Door For James Trafford Transfer
Few teams, if any, would likely turn down the chance to sign James Trafford.
The youngster is touted as one of the top young keepers in England, and a massive talent.
But Southampton’s current situation makes them the most logical destination.
The Saints are 17th in the Championship after 15 games and recently sacked manager Will Still following a poor run of form.
Among the biggest issues contributing to their struggles has been instability between the posts.
Neither Gavin Bazunu nor Alex McCarthy has looked convincing this season.

Bazunu is the second lowest-rated keeper in the league for goals prevented, and third-lowest for crosses claimed, while McCarthy fares little better.
Southampton’s defensive record is amongst the worst in the division, conceding 21 goals to date.
They are screaming out for a confident, dependable keeper to steady them at the back.
They had one in Aaron Ramsdale, but the former Arsenal man is currently on loan at Newcastle, warming the bench behind Nick Pope.
Trafford could therefore be the answer. A strong shot-stopper that commands his box and is comfortable with his feet.
Signing for a mid-table Championship team will not be Trafford’s preference, but his options are limited.
And if Southampton can sure themselves up at the back, a run to the playoffs under a new manager is not impossible.
Could James Trafford Replace Ramsdale At Newcastle?
Another interesting permutation could occur if Newcastle are willing to terminate Ramsdale’s loan.
With Ramsdale returning to the Saints, Newcastle would be in the market for a keeper once more.
Trafford has little chance of displacing Donnarumma at City, but might back himself to compete with Nick Pope.

His loan to St James’ Park could free up Ramsdale to return to the South Coast, solving two clubs’ issues.
But it remains to be seen whether Trafford would be happy to risk another spell on the bench, especially having seen how Ramsdale’s minutes have been limited.
Southampton could therefore be a more attractive option for a short-term move.
At St. Mary’s, Trafford would be certain of the starting jersey, and able to play himself back into form after a difficult few months at City.
West Ham Also Monitoring the Situation
Another club keeping a close eye on James Trafford will be West Ham.
The Irons currently sit 18th in the table, though have won their last two under new boss Nuno Espirito Santo.
Goalkeeper has been a problem position for West Ham in recent seasons.
Alphonse Areola and Mads Hermansen have shared duties, while veteran Lukasz Fabianski remains in the squad.
But with none of their keeping options living up to expectations, Trafford has emerged as a target.

However, with West Ham flirting around the relegation zone, a permanent move in the summer could be more likely – provided they stay up.
Manchester City may also be reluctant to lose a top young talent so soon after signing him.
Trafford may therefore find a loan move in January is his best option, in the short-term at least.
Southampton could be a great move for him in that case, allowing him to re-establish himself as a starter at a top Championship club.
