The seemingly never-ending World Cup draw has been and gone and now the UK sports betting industry knows the extent of the challenge that lays ahead.

Top of the agenda is deciding how to tackle a tournament where a sizeable number of games are kicking off when most people are thinking about their bed.

Will there be an appetite for late-night snacking on the likes of Ecuador versus Curacao at 1am?

Or is the newly expanded tournament featuring 48 teams and 104 games on the other side of the world a marathon that only the football daft will attempt to complete?

Spotlight’s 2026 World Cup Betting Outlook

Spotlight Sports Group went on a scouting mission to gather some pre-tournament intel.

The result is the 2026 World Cup Betting Outlook, a comprehensive survey of 600 fans spread across, the UK, the United States and Latin America.

Mark Langdon, Spotlight’s Group Sports Director, sat down with SportsCasting Bets to give us his exclusive overview of what the global betting public had to say.

“Fans are overwhelmingly excited about the tournament and plan to stay engaged throughout,” said Langdon.

“The expansion is broadly welcomed.

“At the same time, we uncovered some important behavioural shifts, from a huge wave of first-time bettors to rising demand for trusted, easy to understand insight.”

How Will Kick-Off Times Affect Betting Behaviour?

“England’s group-stage kick-off times of 9pm and 10pm should be fine for punters,” said Langdon.

“And the Scots won’t need any encouragement to stay up until 2am to watch their opener against Haiti.”

But with fans parked on their sofas at home for a late-night game rather than out with friends, surely their approach to laying a wager will be affected?

“I think this is going to be more of a pre-play World Cup purely because of the kick-off times,” said Langdon.

“Even I might not stay up for Jordan against Algeria at 4am and you are going to have to be hardcore to see all of the matches through.

“The biggest pre-play impact might be on Bet Builders.

“A lot of punters like to see the teams before placing their Bet Builders and that confirmed team news is going to come through later than some will want to stay up.”

Where Will Bettors Turn To For Guidance?

The cost of tickets for England fans start at a staggering £200 for the opener against Croatia.

Back in the UK, there will be no outdoor screenings or barbecues which have become familiar ways of enjoying a summer tournament.

“A key point is that many fans will watch the match alone,” said Langdon.

“That will mean the second screen will become their main community.

“However, social media isn’t where bettors will turn according to the survey.

“It’s the least trusted platform in the entire study, with 21% expressing total distrust, compared with the overwhelming trust placed in sports news sites (96%) and betting platforms (91%).”

“That opens the door for operators to create their own live community experience through trusted, expert-led content.

“Bettors will be looking for a trusted companion to fill the gap.

How Should Content Teams Approach Covering The World Cup?

“Spotlight will have a human-written in-play blog offering exactly that community experience.

“There will be real-time insights, betting angles and a sense of shared conversation.

“Although staffing them through the night is already giving my team sleepless nights, which is good practice for the World Cup.

“The biggest challenge for any content provider is the base knowledge when it comes to the smaller nations.

“The teams who have qualified for the first time.

“Qualifying form often counts for little.

“A match against a regional rival will be no comparison to taking on one of the heavyweights.

“I have tasked my content team with knowing as much about Curacao as they do about Chelsea.

“You sometimes hear a pundit say they don’t know anything about the nations they are being paid to cover.

“That answer won’t be an option for my team, our research is going to start early in the new year.

“I want my team to be able to say which Jordan defender is the card magnet, or which Haiti midfielder is flying under the radar in the shots on target market.”

Final Whistle: Keep It Simple

Bettors will be seeking clear, concise and informed help, not a tidal wave of confusing promotions and manufactured markets.

“There are plenty of markets to choose from already,” said Langdon.

“What any sportsbook needs to be able to do is offer a strong all-round solution.

“It needs to provide competitive prices, strong boosts and informational and neutral, trusted content.

“It should guide bettors into understanding more about the smaller nations without overwhelming novices.”

England's World Cup fixtures

What Are England And Scotland’s World Cup Kick-Off Times?

England’s two Group L games with Croatia and Ghana will kick-off at 9m UK time.

The third and final match with Panama gets underway at 10pm.

Scotland’s Group C opener with Haiti is at a sleep-challenging 2am, followed by 11pm starts against Morocco and Brazil.

Wales and Northern Ireland are in the same World Cup playoff bracket, fighting over a potential spot in Group B.

A run of 8pm kick-offs would be the reward for qualifying.

First up would be the tournament opener against co-hosts Canada, followed by games with Switzerland and Qatar.

The Republic of Ireland retain hope of qualifying via the playoffs.

They would face the most problematic schedule, beginning with a 3am opener against South Korea in Group A.

The good news is that South Africa would be next at 5pm.

A late-night showdown with co-hosts Mexico at 2am would conclude the group action.
