Marc-André ter Stegen has been told his future is in his hands as Tottenham look towards the Barcelona stopper as a potential replacement in goal.
Spurs boss Thomas Frank could be in the market for a new goalkeeper with Guglielmo Vicario coming under fire for his drop in form.
The Italian endured a nightmare showing in the 3-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest last weekend, adding pressure to Frank’s position in the dugout at the club.
Tottenham have been linked with James Trafford after Gianluigi Donnarumma’s arrival left him warming the bench at Manchester City.
However, Spanish publication Sport suggests Ter Stegen could also be an option.

Ter Stegen has a contract at Barcelona until the summer of 2028, but has slipped down the pecking order due to injuries.
Joan Garcia is the club’s first choice, while former Arsenal man Wojciech Szczesny provides backup.
Ter Stegen was linked with a move away from Barcelona in the summer, but he was happy to remain at the club due to the lack of suitable options on offer.
The same applies in the January transfer window, but the report suggests a potential move to Tottenham could tempt him.
The 33-year-old’s family are settled in the city and have no desire to move, but the temptation of regular first-team football at a club which aligns with his own project would take serious consideration.
His wages could prove problematic, as he’s not willing to sacrifice his salary at Barcelona, but manager Hansi Flick has left the door open for his departure.
Ter Stegen in timely performance reminder
Ter Stegen was handed a rare start in their Copa Del Rey victory over Guadalajara on Tuesday – his first this season – and turned in an impressive showing.
After the game, Flick said: “He had the opportunity to return, and he took it. He has given a lot to the club and must be respected.”
The German coach did emphasise that Garcia will be back in goal for their upcoming clash with Villarreal on Sunday.
However, his performance will encourage Tottenham that he still has the quality to play for a top club despite missing the majority of last season with a back injury.
Ahead of Tuesday’s game, Flick spoke about Ter Stegen’s future and suggested he wouldn’t stand in his way if another club came calling.
He added: “I think it is his decision. We have spoken about his situation and I respect Marc a lot because he is a great goalkeeper and personally is a good person for the team.
“But in the end, it is his decision and it is he who must decide it, not me.”
