Igor Thiago Breaks Premier League Record

Brentford striker Igor Thiago broke a Premier League goalscoring record on Wednesday night.

By netting a brace in his side’s 3-0 victory over Sunderland, Thiago officially broke the record for the most goals scored by a Brazilian in a single Premier League season.

The record, previously held by Roberto Firmino, Gabriel Martinelli and Matheus Cunha with 15 goals apiece, was surpassed as the 24-year-old took his tally to 16 goals for the campaign.

Thiago joined the Bees from Club Brugge in a deal worth around £30m in 2024, and after failing to make an impact last season, he has shone as one of the division’s breakout stars this term.

He is currently second in the league’s goalscoring table, behind only Erling Haaland.

Haaland, a two-time Premier League Golden Boot winner with Manchester City, tops the chart with 20 goals. He netted from the spot in City’s 1-1 draw with Brighton on Wednesday.

The Norwegian broke a record of his own recently, too. Haaland scored his 100th goal in the Premier League last month, becoming the fastest player in history to do so after just 111 games.

Meanwhile, Brentford are up to fifth place in the table after defeating the Black Cats.

It’s a mightily impressive feat for Keith Andrews’ side, as many had tipped the West London club to be in and amongst the relegation zone ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

Andrews was also among the favourites in the Premier League sack race odds market prior to the season getting underway. He is now firmly an outsider in the market, priced at 80/1.

Brentford are now unbeaten in six consecutive English top-flight outings (W4, D2).

Next up, the Bees travel to Sheffield Wednesday for their FA Cup third round fixture on Saturday afternoon, before returning to Premier League action away at Chelsea the following weekend.

  • Roberto Firmino (Liverpool) – 15 Goals (2017/18)
  • Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal) – 15 Goals (2022/23)
  • Matheus Cunha (Wolves) – 15 Goals (2024/25)
  • Robinho (Manchester City) – 14 Goals (2008/09)
  • Gabriel Jesus (Manchester City) – 14 Goals (2019/20)

Igor Thiago Tipped for Brazil Call-Up

Given his fine form, Thiago could be in line for his first international call-up.

He previously rejected a call-up to represent Brazil at under-23 level to keep his international options open, however he has made no secret of his desire to turn out for his country one day.

“I’ve always dreamed of being able to play for Brazil,” Thiago told the Daily Mail.

“I always ask God that when he takes me to the national team, I don’t want to go just for the sake of it. When I get there, I want to stay.”

His 16-goal tally makes him hard to ignore, with Carlo Ancelotti reportedly considering handing the ex-Ludogorets striker a maiden call-up as next summer’s World Cup edges ever closer.

Their current options at striker include Chelsea’s Joao Pedro, Tottenham’s Richarlison, Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha, Nottingham Forest’s Igor Jesus and many more.

Selecao have been drawn into Group C for next summer’s tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada, set to face off against Morocco, Haiti and Scotland.
