Cheltenham Honour Top Racing Commentator John Hunt and His Family

Cheltenham racecourse have announced they will rename Saturday’s December Gold Cup to honour top racing commentator John Hunt and his family – which is the feature event at the two-day December Meeting this week. 

December Gold Cup Renamed In Honour Of Commentator John Hunt and Family

This Saturday’s December Gold Cup will be called the Support The Hunt Family Fund December Gold Cup.

With the race being shown live at 1:50pm on the ITV Racing schedule.

A move by the racecourse to back the family fund that has been set up by John and his daughter Amy after the commentator’s wife Carol and other daughters Hannah and Louise Hunt were all tragically killed in July 2024.

The Hunt Family Fund – as their strap-line says – is there to help and support inspiring young women via various charities.

Cheltenham racecourse also revealed they will be hosting a fundraising event for the Hunt Family Fund on Thursday.

Who Is Favourite To Win The Support The Hunt Family Fund December Gold Cup

This year’s Support The Hunt Family Fund December Gold Cup race looks a competitive affair with several horses vying for the favourites berth.

One of those is the JP McManus-owned Jagwar.

He won the TrustATrader Plate Handicap Chase last season at the track as one of the Cheltenham Festival favourites.

Jagwar hasn’t been seen on the track since taking that race back in March.

And was pulled out of last month’s Paddy Power Gold Cup due to the heavy ground.

Recent Paddy Power Gold Cup second, Vincenzo, and third Hoe Joly Smoke are also featuring high up the betting for Saturday’s newly-named race.

With the last-named running for the Dan Skelton yard, who are topping the 2025/26 British jump trainers championship at the moment.

However, the December Gold Cup favourite has a shocking record to overcome.

The race has only seen ONE market leader win since 2000.
