Novak Djokovic has heaped praise on young Czech sensation Jakub Mensik ahead of their upcoming Shanghai Masters quarter-final encounter. The Serbian superstar, a four-time champion in Shanghai, believes Mensik has the potential to become “one of the best players in the world.” The 19-year-old Mensik has been making waves on the tennis scene, and his victory over ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round was another impressive milestone. Djokovic is a significant favourite for the match but is refusing to underestimate the rising star, admitting to having given Mensik advice in the past. Jakub Mensik: “My tennis inspiration is Novak Djokovic. Because of him, I started to play tennis. He is my biggest idol. Because of him, I wouldn’t be here.” ❤️pic.twitter.com/A1O6wSnQZy — Danny 🐊 (@DjokovicFan_) February 22, 2024 “He’s a young guy who’s on the rise,” Djokovic said. “I’ve been following him since he played the Australian Open final in the juniors. “We’ve had a week of training in Belgrade a couple of times, and he’s come to play in the Serbian Open on clay. I’ve always thought he had the potential to become one of the best players in the world.” Both Djokovic and Mensik have been in fine form in Shanghai. Djokovic has dropped just one set so far, while Mensik has already defeated two top-10 opponents, including Andrey Rublev. A victory over Djokovic would be a major breakthrough for Mensik, who is looking to make a name for himself on the ATP tour.
