Ex-Arsenal man Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The Metropolitan Police have said the offences are reported to have taken place between 2021-2022. The charges relate to three women, with two counts of rape relating to one woman, three counts in connection with a second woman, and one count of sexual assault relating to a third woman. Ghana international Partey, 32, left Arsenal at the end of June following the end of his contract. But former club Arsenal have faced intense criticism after the charges were announced. According to the Telegraph, Arsenal continued to play Partey in full knowledge of an ongoing investigation. The midfielder played a key role for the Gunners in three successive title challenges. He was also involved in Arsenal’s Champions League semi-final tie against Real Madrid. Thomas Partey Charged With Rape And Sexual Assault Jaswant Narwal, of the Crown Prosecution Service, told the Telegraph: “The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised the prosecution of Thomas Partey for multiple counts of rape – after carefully reviewing a comprehensive file of evidence. “Our prosecutors have worked closely with officers in the Metropolitan Police who have carried out the investigation, to review the evidence and advise on the appropriate charges. “We remind everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial. “We know there will be significant public interest in this announcement, but it is absolutely vital that there is no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.” 🚨 Thomas Partey, officially charged with rape by the Metropolitan Police Service. “The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the Metropolitan Police Service to charge a man after a file of evidence was submitted by detectives. “The Met has issued a charge and requisition to… pic.twitter.com/s8FcKC7h3f — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) July 4, 2025 Thomas Partey will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 5 August. Campaigners Outraged At Thomas Partey News Many are furios with Arsenal for continuing to play Partey while he was under investigation. They point out that other professions would suspend an employee over a serious criminal allegations. But Partey made 52 appearances for Arsenal in 2024-25. Speaking to Telegraph Sport, Dino Nocivelli, a Leigh Day partner with experience in abuse cases in sport, said: “I think the fact that the defendant in these cases has been able to continue his working life is wrong and clearly sends the wrong message for such serious allegations as rape and sexual assault. “The player should have been suspended while his football club and the Football Association investigated the allegations, with no prospect of resuming his work until the investigations were concluded.” 🚨 BREAKING! At the time, The Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence group said: “While we recognise that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty, we would find any scenario in which a club was to continually select and promote a player under investigation for sexual offences deeply concerning. “This would give the suggestion that success on the pitch far outweighs respect for victims of sexual violence.” Arsenal fan and founding member of the protest organisation, Honor Barber, said: “As Arsenal fans, I really wanted for us to be saying something about it, because it shouldn’t be that it’s just used as a rivalry thing like other aspects of football. “This is so much more serious than that.” “There’s a lot of fans who are really outraged about this but don’t really know what to do next.” Written by Sports EditorJames Chittick James is an experienced writer covering a wide range of sports, including Premier League and European football, Rugby Union, WWE and the NFL.
