In demand Lille frontman Jonathan David admitted it has long been his dream to play in La Liga but believes he can adapt his skills to any league in the world.

Jonathan David transfer update: “I would like to play in La Liga”

David, 25, is enjoying another splendid season with Ligue 1 outfit Lille, bagging 23 goals and ten assists in all competitions so far and he’s emerged as one of the hottest properties in Europe.

The Canada international, who became the country’s all-time top goalscorer in November, became the most expensive player from his nation when joining Lille for a €30 million fee in 2020.

He won a league title in his first season at the club and has gone from strength to strength ever since, continuously improving his production output year on year.

From 18 goal contributions in 2020/21, 19 in 2021/22, 30 in 2022/23 to 34 in 2023/24, this rapidly improving forward is on the radar of every major club on the continent.

Speaking to the ‘It’s Called Soccer!’ podcast, David explained it has always been his dream to play in La Liga but feels he could adapt anywhere:

“To be honest, I think I can adapt to every league. Every league has their differences. I think the Premier League is a lot faster and more physical than all the other leagues.

“But I grew up watching a lot of La Liga. I wouldn’t say that would be my preferred league, but I think that’s a league that I enjoyed watching the most…I think one day, I would like to play there. But will that happen? I don’t know. I’m not opposed to anything, and we’ll just see where the future takes us.”

Jonathan David is Lille’s all-time leading goalscorer in European competitions

With his goal against Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of Lille’s fateful Champions League knockout tie last week, David became the club’s all-time leading goalscorer in Europe.

His contract is due to expire later this June and it looks increasingly likely he will leave Lille on a free, paving the way for a frantic transfer saga between big guns like Arsenal and Liverpool.

As per the best football betting sites, David (14) is a general 12/1 shot to win the Ligue 1 top goalscorer award – trailing only PSG’s Ousmane Dembele (21) and Marseille’s Mason Greenwood (15).

In the Champions League this season, David has goals against Dortmund, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Liverpool and Feyenoord.

The New York-born striker ranks alongside Kylian Mbappe in the best finishers among the top five leagues since 2017/18.
