Jose Mourinho could face Manchester United and Tottenham following the Europa League draw but what is the Special One’s record against his former sides?
Following the Europa League Round of 16 draw, a lot has been made of the possibility over Jose Mourinho returning to Old Trafford and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
If Fenerbahce make their way to the quarter finals by beating Rangers across two legs, then the Turkish side will face the winner of Manchester United and Real Sociedad.
Should Mourinho manage to find a victory against the Red Devils and Roma earn a place in the semi-finals, then the Portuguese coach will find himself against another former side..
Following that, if Fenerbahce make their way to the final and Tottenham do the same, then Mourinho will face yet another former side in the final.
Obviously a lot of football needs to be played before that can become a reality, but Mourinho returning to both of these sides would be box office.
Below we have gone through the career of Jose Mourinho and his record against former sides (note: this only includes results after he has managed the club).

Jose Mourinho Record Against Former Sides
Benfica: September 2000-December 2000
Record: W6 D2 L1 (66% win rate)
In September 2000, a young and hungry Jose Mourinho would begin his career as a professional football manager as he took control of Benfica.
The iconic coach was only in charge for around three months before he parted ways with the club following a change of president at Benfica – he managed 11 games, winning 11, drawing three and losing two (54% win rate).
Mourinho picked up a draw against Benfica at his first job after leaving the club, guiding Uniao de Leiria to a 1-1 draw
He went on to beat Benfica six out of nine times, winning four times in a row with Porto between 2001/02 and 2003/04, before drawing his final league match against his former side.
Mourinho’s final match against Benfica as Porto boss brought his only defeat, as he lost 2-1 during extra time in the Taca de Portugal final in May 2004.
His last two matches against Benfica came in the 2017/18 Champions League group stages during his time as Manchester United manager – beating Benfica 2-0 at home and 1-0 away.
Uniao de Leiria: July 2001 – Jan 2002
Record: W5, D2, L0 (71% win rate)
As previously mentioned, Mourinho went to take control of Uniao de Leiria following his exit from Benfica and he spent six months at the helm.
After leaving the club, he went on to face Uniao de Leiria six times during his time as Porto manager and avoided defeat on each occasion.
His first two matches against the Portuguese side ended in draws, but Mourinho went on to win five consectuive times against them – including two wins in finals.
Mourinho’s win rate against UDL is the best from all of his battles against former sides, winning 72% of the time.
FC Porto: January 2002 – June 2004
Record: W3, L2, D1 (50% win rate)
Jose Mourinho caught the attention of football fans across the globe during his time as Porto manager, being appointed in January 2002 and winning 11 of his first 15 games.
Porto went on to win the league and Taca de Portugal in Mourinho’s second season, before winning the Champions League in 2004 – one of the most historic cup triumphs in history.
Since leaving the club, Mourinho has faced Porto six times and picked up three wins, with each match coming in the Champions League.
His opening three matches against Porto came during Mourinho’s first stint as Chelsea boss, winning, drawing and losing during these games.
The most recent face-offs were in 2015/16 during Mourinho’s second and final spell as Chelsea boss, as the ‘Special One’ faced his former side in the Champions League group stages – winning the home tie and losing away from Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea: July 2004 – September 2007 & July 2013 – December 2015
Record: W4, D3, L7 (28.57% win rate)
Mourinho became the first Portuguese managed in Premier League history after taking control at Chelsea in July 2004.
During his first spell at the club, Mourinho won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups which cemented his place as one of the best in the business.
He left the club in September 2007 but would return almost six years later, as he came back for his second spell in July 2013.
Before returning to the club in 2013, Mourinho faced Chelsea twice during his time as Inter manager – beating the Blues in both legs of the 2009/10 Champions League Ro16.
He would go on to face Chelsea seven times during his spell as Manchester United manager, where he lost four times, won twice and drew the other.
Mourinho was thrashed 4-0 on his Premier League return to Stamford Bridge and another one of these defeats came in the 2017/18 FA Cup final, as an Eden Hazard penalty was enough to win it for the Blues.
Mourinho’s most recent encounters with Chelsea came during his interesting spell as Tottenham manager, as he faced the Blues five times (1W, 3L & 1D)
His only win for Spurs against Chelsea came via a penalty shootout in the Carabao Cup fourth round and Mourinho has only won at Stamford Bridge as the away manager once.
Inter Milan: July 2008 – June 2010
Record: W1 D0 L5 (16% win rate)
Mourinho left Chelsea in 2007 and became Inter manager soon after in July 2008, where he continued his legacy as an elite coach.
The Portuguese icon won two Serie A titles, an Italian Super Cup, Italian Cup and the Champions League during his two years in Milan.
His record against Inter is one of his worst out of any club, facing the Italian side six times during his time as Roma manager and only winning once.
Real Madrid: July 2010 – June 2013
Record: W0 D0 L1 (0% win rate)
Now onto the former side that Mourinho has never beaten – Real Madrid.
In July 2010 Mourinho began his tenure as Real Madrid manager and was appointed to help the team win ‘La Decima’ which did not go according to plan.
Although he failed on that front, Mourinho did win the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup while also ending Barcelona’s dominance in La Liga by winning the title in 2011/12.
Since leaving Madrid, Mourinho has only face them on one occasion and the match did not go in his favour, as Manchester United lost 2-1 in the Super Cup final.
Manchester United – July 2016 – December 2018
Record: W1, D1, L2 (25% win rate)
In a move that stunned the Premier League, Jose Mourinho returned to England and took over as Manchester United manager in July 2016.
This came after the end of his second spell as Chelsea boss and he went on to win the Europa League and League Cup in 2017.
He was eventually sacked by Manchester United in December 2018 following a poor run of results and he has faced the club five times since then.
Four of these came during his time in north London, losing 2-1 on his return to Old Trafford, picking up a point in the reverse fixture during the 2019/20 season, thrashing United 6-1 at Old Trafford and then losing 3-1 at home in the 2020/21 campaign.
His most recent meeting with the Red Devils actually came in this Europa League campaign, as his Fenerbahce side held United to a 1-1 draw in the group stages.
