McLaren F1 star Lando Norris has revealed that he has completely eliminated drinking alcohol to help with his title aspirations in the 2025 season.

The decision comes a year after a high-profile incident during the 2024 Koningsdag (King’s Day) celebrations in Amsterdam where he suffered a facial injury from broken glass while partying.

It left him with a bandaged nose that sparked viral social media attention. It didn’t necessarily take away from his on-track performance though, as he took his maiden F1 victory just eight days later at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix.

Norris went on to challenge for the 2024 drivers’ championship – which was won by off-track friend and on-track rival Max Verstappen.

Ahead of this year’s Koningsdag on Saturday, April 26, Norris revealed he will not attend the 2025 edition of the event.

Lando Norris Gives Up Alcohol In Quest For F1 World Title

Lando Norris has opted to skip this year’s Koningsdag celebrations, in order to stay focused on his 2025 title efforts.

He told Viaplay: “I would have loved to go again because it was one of the best days of my life. And last time, I won in Miami straight afterwards.

“I had a good week in Amsterdam with Martin (Garrix, DJ) but I’m fighting for the World Championship now.

“I can’t afford to do that now and I have to go back home and train. The [Saudi Arabian Grand Prix] race was physically demanding and I’d like to have a drink now.

“But I haven’t had a single drink all year and I’m proud of that. I just have to keep working hard and can’t go out and party.

“I’m competing against the best in the world here – Max [Verstappen], Oscar [Piastri], Charles [Leclerc] and George [Russell]. If I make even the slightest mistake, I have to pay for it immediately.”

F1 2025 Title Fight

Lando Norris’ decision to prioritise on-track performance comes at a time where he remains arguably the favourite to win the drivers’ championship in 2025.

He kicked off the season with a commanding win at the Australian Grand Prix. However, he has faltered in recent races with teammate Oscar Piastri taking the lead of the championship after winning three of the last four races.

In Bahrain, he qualified sixth and incurred a penalty for a false start. In Saudi Arabia he crashed in qualifying and started 10th but recovered to fourth.

Max Verstappen, in his inferior Red Bull, is also keeping himself within touching distance of the two McLarens ahead.

The next race is in Miami, the scene of Norris’ first Grand Prix victory last season.
