Marti Cifuentes

Fans have called for Leicester City to sack manager Marti Cifuentes after Tuesday’s draw against 10-man Middlesbrough.

The Foxes, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, drew 1-1 with Boro, conceding in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

The draw at the King Power Stadium extended Leicester City’s winless run to five games in the Championship (D 2, L 3). They have won just once in their last 10 outings. The 2015/16 English champions beat Swansea City 3-1, away from home, on October 4.

Leicester City’s poor run of form has put Cifuentes under enormous pressure, with reports linking him with imminent exit. The next Leicester manager betting odds market sees Michael Carrick as the favourite to replace the Spanish manager.

Leicester City Drop Point Against Middlesbrough From Winning Position

Jordan Ayew scored from the spot in the first-half injury time to give Leicester City the lead against Middlesbrough. Rob Edwards’ team went down to 10 men after Alfie Jones was sent off for a professional foul in the 90th minute.

Playing with an extra player, Leicester seemed destined for a second win in 10 games, but were ultimately pegged back. Callum Brittain delivered a deep cross into the Leicester box, allowing captain Luke Ayling to head in the winning goal.

It was the third time since October, after 1-1 draws with Wrexham and Portsmouth, that Leicester had to settle for a point after scoring the first goal.

Fans Ask Leicester City to Sack Marti Cifuentes After Middlesbrough Draw

Fans were far from thrilled with the result, with many criticising Cifuentes’ tactics and asking the board to sack him.

@Duckmann90 wrote:

Sack him now then we’ve got international break to get a replacement

@alexharris_92 added:

Got battered all game, created nothing, manager incapable of instilling some creative tactics and goes negative immediately yet again when winning. Haven’t won at home since August 😂😂😂

@LeeDunstan4 claimed Cifuentes was not utilising the experience at Leicester’s disposal.

He wrote:

He has to go now!! Clueless on tactics, getting overrun all over the pitch by Middlesbrough, we have premier league experience all over the pitch and we’re hoofing the ball away to get up the pitch. Diabolical football. No creativity. No overlaps no underlaps, fatawu marked by 2

@cuzcuzverde criticised Leicester’s performance under Cifuentes, noting the lack of progress.

This is a track record of a club fighting against relegation, not fighting for promotion

@_joshhollandd said it was alarming that Cifuentes was still experimenting with his squad four months into his tenure.

Among all the worries (there’s plenty), the biggest one yet is that we’re four months into Marti Cifuentes’ time at the club and it’s clear he’s yet to find his ‘best XI.

Add that with the constant drawing, switching off and zero attacking threat.”

Cifuentes made four changes to his starting XI after Leicester City lost 2-0 at home to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. His team, however, could not dictate play. They only registered six shots to Boro’s 17 and played 219 passes fewer than the visitors.

Cifuentes Says His Team Suffered a ‘Very Cruel End’ on Tuesday

After the game, Marti Cifuentes admitted he was frustrated with the result, but praised his players for their attitude and commitment.

He said in the post-match press conference (via BBC):

I’m very frustrated. It’s a very cruel end, especially in a game where the guys showed a great attitude, great commitment, great work ethic. It’s a tough one to take.

We were very close to the three points. We were playing against a team that is in a good dynamic and is doing well at the start of the season and there are definitely things we need to improve. But in terms of energy and how the attitude was from the players, it was top.”

Leicester City, who remain in 13th place in the rankings, return to action with a trip to Norwich City on Saturday.
