The latest Liverpool injury update ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Aston Villa sees Arne Slot rule out two key players.

Liverpool injury update: Gomez may require surgery, Gakpo targeting City return

The league leaders travel to the West Midlands in search of victory which could extend their advantage at the top of the Premier League table to a massive ten points.

Liverpool find themselves slightly shorthanded for the trip with both Cody Gakpo and Joe Gomez ruled out by Reds boss Slot in his pre-match press conference.

Gomez is facing an extended period on the sidelines with a hamstring injury that could take ‘a long time’ to recover from and may require surgery, but the medical staff are still assessing.

“Joe will take quite a long time. He is going to be out for numerous weeks because of a hamstring injury.

“He will a miss large part of the end of the season but we expect him to be back in the end phase of the season. He might [need surgery] but that is something we still have to assess.”

As for Gakpo, Slot suggested that while he will miss the Villa game he is very close to a return and could be back on the pitch for Sunday’s meeting with Manchester City at the Etihad.

As per the best football betting sites, Liverpool are a general 2/7 chance to win the league which would be a record-equalling 20th crown to join Manchester United at the pinnacle of the English game.

The earlier meeting between Liverpool and Villa this season saw the Reds run away 2-0 winners at Anfield thanks to goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool are undefeated in their last four trips to Villa Park in all competitions, winning in the FA Cup and twice in the league with the most recent result a 3-3 draw.
