Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones Cost Liverpool In Penalty Shootout
After a strong performance in the opening leg, PSG would have been full of confidence going into this Champions League RO16 second-leg despite trailing 1-0.
This confidence was clear to see from the opening whistle, as the visitors brought the tie level in the 12th minute thanks to Ousmane Dembele.
No player has scored more goals in 2025 than the PSG star, scoring 21 goals since Janaury 1st and Dembele managed to bundle the ball home after some good work from Bradley Barcola.
Liverpool had a number of chances in the first half and were not deterred by going behind, as Mohamed Salah missed a guilt-edged chance.
Ibrahima Konate and Diogo Jota also came close to putting Liverpool ahead on the night and on aggregate, but Gianlugi Donnarumma kept the hosts out with some great saves.
PSG came close just before the break through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, but his effort was blocked before it could trouble Alisson.
Liverpool came into the second-half with a point to prove and looked to have found the important goal through Dominik Szoboszlai, however his effort was ruled out for offside.
Luis Diaz and Jarell Quansah also came close for the hosts, but PSG held firm defensively and were not going going to be broken down easily.
Neither side could find a winner in the designated 90 minutes, meaning this Champions League RO16 tie was forced to go to extra-time.
It was clear that both sides were running on empty in extra time and Desire Doue found the main chance as his effort whistle past the far post.
After 120 minutes it was all-square and a penalty shootout was needed to separate these two European giants in the Champions.
Vitinha stepped up first for PSG and he calmly placed the ball into the bottom right corner, before Mohamed Salah smashed the ball home for Liverpool.
With both teams scoring their opening penalty, the responsibility fell to Goncalo Ramos to keep the 100% record up and he found the bottom corner.
Darwin Nunez was next up for Liverpool and the Uruguayan’s effort was saved by Donnarumma to give PSG the lead in the shootout.
Ousmane Dembele made it 3/3 for PSG and Curtis Jones faced the same fate as Nunez as the PSG goalkeeper kept the Liverpool midfielder’s effort out.
Doue had the chance to send PSG through to the UCL quarter finals and the winger made no mistake, smashing the ball home and sending Liverpool out of the competition.
