Barnes At The Double As Magpies Breeze Past Red Devils

Newcastle and Manchester United rounded off Sunday’s Premier League action as they faced off on Tyneside, where the Magpies looked to build on their impressive recent form to take a step closer to Champions League qualification.

As for the Red Devils, they headed into the tie without a win in two consecutive league outings, having lost to Nottingham Forest and drawn against Manchester City, while they were also held to a stalemate by Lyon in Europe on Thursday.

Unsurprising given recent form, the hosts that looked likelier to score throughout the early stages, and they did just that on the 24-minute mark when Sandro Tonali expertly converted after some nice link-up play with Alexander Isak.

The visitors responded 13 minutes later though, as Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho restored the parity with a fine finish off the inside of the post from Diogo Dalot’s clever flicked pass.

It took just four minutes after returning from the half-time break for Newcastle to restore their lead, with Harvey Barnes turning home from close range after Josh Murphy put the ball back into the danger zone from Tino Livramento’s cross.

Barnes was on hand to add a second, and the Magpies’ third, on the 64-minute mark. The Englishman snatched the ball from the visiting defence before going on a darting run through the middle and smashing beyond Altay Bayindir.

The Red Devils’ dreadful evening was rounded off in the 77th minute when Bayindir’s attempted pass was intercepted by Joelinton, whose header put Bruno Guimaraes in on goal, and the Brazilian made no mistake in making it 4-1.

Eddie Howe’s side, managed by Jason Tindall in his absence today, move up to fourth place in the table with the result, a point behind Nottingham Forest and a point ahead of Manchester City, while United sit in 14th.
