Frankie Dettori To Ride In Saturday’s $3m Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park

As the final 2025 Pegasus World Cup runners are announced – Frankie Dettori, who is currently based in the US, has been jocked-up in the $3m on the Doug O’Neill-trained Mixto.

The Pegasus World Cup runners for 2025 also include last year’s Kentucky Derby hero Mystik Dan, 2023 Pennsylvania Derby winner Saudi Crown, former Breeders’ Cup Classic winner White Abarrio and the likely favourite with the best betting sitesLocked.

Over the years, since it was first run in 2016, the prize money purse has fallen from $12m to the current rate of $3m – but this is still a tidy carrot for riders, trainers and owners to aim at.

Frankie Dettori Has Live Chance Of Landing Mega Pegasus World Cup Prize

Veteran rider Frankie Dettori has never ridden Mixto, but despite this the pocket Italian has been booked to ride the 5 year-old in Saturday’s lucrative Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park.

Mixto was last seen running third in the Native Diver Stakes at Del Mar and before that was 11th in the Breeders’ Cup Classic 2024 (watch below).

In total, Mixto has raced 16 times and won just twice – winning $794,180 in total prize money.

His trainer Doug O’Neill has never won the Pegasus World Cup. His only ever runner in the race coming in 2016 with 150/1 outsider Semper Fortis (7th).

2024 Kentucky Derby Winner Mystik Dan Another 2025 Pegasus World Cup Runner

One of the star attractions on show at the 2025 Pegasus World Cup this year will be last season’s Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan.

This Kenneth McPeek runner cemented his name in the Churchill Downs hall-of-fame with that win back in May and followed that up with a fair second in the Preakness Stakes.

That said, his Derby win remains his last to date.

Having raced three times since and was last in action running 6th in the Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita on Boxing Day.

Locked Heads 2025 Pegasus World Cup Runners With The Layers

The Pegasus World Cup has been a good race for the favourites – with five of the nine (55%) winning.

This is a plus for the Todd Pletcher Pegasus World Cup runner Locked, who is expected to be popular in the market after winning four of his six starts.

The most recent being a nice win in the Cigar Mile at Aqueduct at the start of December 2024.

Pletcher has won the race once in the past – this was in 2022 with Life Is Good.

Former Breeders’ Cup Classic Winner White Abarrio Also Heading To Gulfstream Park

This year’s Pegasus World Cup runners will also see a former Breeders’ Cup Classic winner as the 2023 hero White Abarrio is entered.

Now aged 6, this Saffie A Joseph Jr runner was also seen running a close second here at Gulfstream in the G3 Mr Prospector Stakes over 7f.

He’s actually only raced four times since his Breeders’ Cup Classic win in 2023. With an Allowance Optional Claiming win last November his only victory.

On a plus, he’ll be ridden on Saturday’s Pegasus World Cup by top rider Irad Ortiz Jr.

Who has won this prize twice in the past and is the winning-most rider in the contest.

Eight Of The Last Nine Pegasus World Cup Winners Came From Stalls 8 Or Lower and Aged Four Or Five

If you like your horse racing trends and stats, then there are two ‘must-haves’ to apply to the final 2025 Pegasus World Cup runners.

A massive 89% of the nine winners have been aged 4 or 5, plus also came from stalls 1-8.

If we apply these trends to the 2025 entries we are left with. These are the Dettori-ridden Mixto, Saudi Crown, Crupi, Stronghold and Vitality.

Bob Baffert Has Trained The Most Pegasus World Cup Winners

US hall-of-famer Bob Baffert is the winning-most trainer in the history of the Pegasus World Cup – even though there’s only been nine runnings.

Baffert has still managed to land three of these with wins in the first running with former horse of the year Arrogate. He added Mucho Gusto in 2020 and also took the 2024 renewal with National Treasure.

But the good news for the other US trainers in 2025, is that Bob Baffert DOESN’T have a 2025 Pegasus World Cup runner.
