James Barrett does well with his handicap debutants, especially those who had raced within the past 28 days. Since the spring of 2016 the score is six winners from 16 runners for a profit of £56.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. All those runners came on the Flat but I still want to side with MAKE SUNSHINE, runner-up in a maiden hurdle at Naas last time, now that her attention is switched to handicapping.

WIND RIVER (system – Sioux Nation, small fields, 5f-7f)

Progeny of the sire Sioux Nation have an uncanny knack of finding traffic trouble and they seem ideal suited to race in small fields. Had we backed those who ran over 5f-7f in fields of ten or fewer runners we’d have found 91 winners from 456 bets (20% strike-rate) for a profit of £128.89 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those who finished in the top four last time out were 58 from 199 (29.2%) for a profit of £92.57. WIND RIVER, a close second of eight over 1m at Newcastle last time, looks interesting now dropping down to 7f in this nine-runner novice contest.
