Robin Van Persie Claims ‘Door Is Closed’ Over Possible Return To Arsenal

Robin Van Persie has ruled out any chance of a return to Arsenal, as the Dutchman believes fans would not take too kindly to a reunion.

The former Arsenal star has confirmed that a return to north London is unlikely to occur, whether it be on a coaching basis or to just watch a match.

This may comes as a surprise as Van Persie contributed to 188 goals in 278 appearances for the Gunners across an eight-year spell in the capital.

Van Persie spent the most time with Arsenal out of all of his teams during a successful career, but his move to Manchester United burnt all bridges with Gunners fans.

In August 2012, the Dutchman joined Sir Alex Ferguson’s side and won the Premier League in his first season at Old Trafford – winning the golden boot in the process.

He also scored against the Gunners in both Premier League fixtures during that season, but did not celebrate on either occasion.

However, in the following season (2014/15) the prolific striker scored a header against Arsenal at Old Trafford and gave a very animated celebration.

The 41-year-old is now in the beginning of his managerial career, taking charge of SC Heerenveen – who currently sit 12th in the Eredivisie.

When speaking on any return to the Emirates, Van Persie said: “I don’t expect to work at Arsenal. I think that door is closed.

“Because of my switch to Manchester United, that is my assessment. You never know in football, but that is my assessment.

“It is still sensitive for them, not for me. It is especially sensitive for the Arsenal fans. I have learned that planning so far ahead makes no sense at all. I don’t want that either.

“I mainly live in the here and now. I really enjoy it here and I am very proud to be the coach of SC Heerenveen. I feel very welcome within the club and among the fans. I also think that is important that you feel welcome.”

Other former players have been linked with a return to the club following the departure of sporting director, Edu, with Per Mertersacker and Tomas Rosicky being highlighted.
