Ruben Amorim broke another unwanted Manchester United record on Sunday, moments before his final post-match press conference.
The Portuguese boss sparked speculation of a rift with the United hierarchy immediately after their 1-1 draw against Leeds at Elland Road.
The most damning comments he made included, “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. That is clear.”
He also told the scouting department and Jason Wilcox, the director of football, to “do their job” and added, “We move on” in 18 months, when his contract is up.
Amorim immediately became the favourite in the Premier League sack race before his sacking was confirmed on Monday morning.
An unwanted Manchester United record broken
When Brenden Aaronson fired home for Leeds in the 62nd minute, it meant United have now failed to keep a clean sheet in 15 consecutive away matches.
According to Squawka, that’s the longest streak they’ve endured since the Premier League was formed in 1992.
The record began with a 1-1 draw against Fulham in August 2025, which means it has stretched to five months.
During those 15 games, they have conceded 22 goals, including four at Bournemouth, three at Brentford and three at Manchester City.
While breaking the record in the current Premier League era, United also matched their current streak 40 years ago, during the 1985/86 campaign.
The unwanted record is just another addition to the list under Amorim since his appointment in November 2024.
They include reaching 15 league defeats in just 28 matches. That is the fastest any Manchester United manager has reached that tally.
Finishing in 15th last season was also their lowest top-flight position in over 50 years.
Who could replace Ruben Amorim as Manchester United manager?
Speculation will now turn to who Manchester United will replace Amorim with, now that they’ve decided his position has become untenable.
The board have been long-term admirers of Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, as he remains the current favourite to be the next Manchester United manager.
Glasner, who has overachieved with the Eagles, is set to leave Selhurst Park at the end of the season when his contract expires.
Other options include Enzo Maresca after his departure from Chelsea last week. The Argentine had held talks with Juventus and Manchester City and has been earmarked to potentially replace Pep Guardiola in the future.
Maresca is also emerging as a potential name in the next Tottenham manager odds, with doubts lingering over Thomas Frank.
Aston Villa Unai Emery is on the bookies’ shortlist, as is Laurent Blanc and former Barcelona boss Xavi.
