Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has hit back at club legend Wayne Rooney after the former striker called his ambitions for the Red Devils “naive.”
Amorim, whose side suffered a disappointing FA Cup exit to Fulham in a fifth-round penalty shootout, took aim at Rooney’s recent managerial struggles in response.
Wayne Rooney Questions Amorim’s Ambition
Rooney, a five-time Premier League winner with United, was on punditry duty for BBC when he dismissed Amorim’s suggestion that the club’s long-term goal is to win the league title.
With United languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, Rooney was skeptical of Amorim’s vision, stating, “I think it’s a little naive to say they’re looking to win the Premier League because from where they are now, they’re a long way off that.”

Ruben Amorim’s Blunt Response to Rooney
Amorim, undeterred by critics, was quick to dismiss Rooney’s remarks. The 40-year-old Portuguese coach, whose reputation has soared in recent years, doubled down on his ambitions for the club.
Addressing Rooney’s comments in a post-match interview, Amorim fired back, saying, “That is the goal. Being naive is to think we are going to do it this season or be the best contender next season.
“So I know that at this moment everybody knows everything. I know that and it’s really easy – I was a pundit when I finished my career. I know it’s really easy.
“Our goal is to win the Premier League. Maybe it is not with me. But our goal, as a club, the board, is to win the Premier League like we did in the past with all the great glories and legends of this club.
“We will want to do better, and we are in a difficult moment. And I’m not naive, that’s why I’m here, at 40 years old, coaching Manchester United.”

Rooney’s Managerial Struggles
While Amorim is tasked with overseeing yet another rebuild at Old Trafford, Rooney’s own managerial career has hit roadblocks.
The United legend was recently dismissed by Birmingham City after just 83 days, following a disastrous spell that saw the club plummet down the Championship table.
After that, his tenure at Plymouth lasted only 25 games, adding further doubts about his coaching credentials.
Can Amorim Deliver on His Promise?
Despite their struggles, United remain in the Europa League and are still working towards long-term success under Amorim’s leadership.
The Portuguese tactician has earned widespread praise for his tactical acumen and squad-building abilities, and his vision for restoring Manchester United to Premier League glory is clear.
However, with the club enduring another turbulent season, Amorim faces the daunting challenge of proving that his bold ambitions are more than just talk.
