Dominic Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion, has officially retired from professional tennis.
The Austrian announced his decision after a first-round defeat at the Vienna Open, his hometown tournament.
Thiem, a former world No. 3, had been struggling with injuries in recent years and has made the decision to retire at the moderately early age of 31.
In a post on X, Thiem wrote: “What a night! I would like to sincerely thank everyone who joined me for my farewell last night! It means the world to me that you all came to share this special moment with me.”
He then followed it up with: “The exhibition match with Alexander Zverev, the ONE SHOT CUP, the amazing performance by The Clairvoyants – and of course the farewell itself – all meant so much to me! A huge thank you to all of you for making this an unforgettable evening!”

Dear Domi,
I’m sad to see you retire this soon, but I’m going to cherish our battles and our fun times on and off the court. Playing an exhibition match with you in Austria in 2018 remains a fond memory.
Thank you for holding the one-handed backhand flag so high.
