Tottenham Captain Son Heung-Min Files Criminal Complaint Over Alleged Blackmail Attempt

Tottenham’s Son Heung-Min has filed a criminal complaint with South Korean authorities after reports that a woman threatened him with a false pregnancy claim in an alleged blackmail attempt.

The Gangnam Police Station in the Korean capital Seoul said it has detained two people on suspicion of extortion and attempted extortion.

South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that a man in his 40s and a woman in her 20s have been taken into custody over the allegations.

The woman allegedly approached Son in 2024, claiming to be carrying his child, reportedly asking for money to keep quiet.

Further demands for money allegedly followed in March, this time from the man.

Son Agency Says Blackmail Plot Based On False Claims

In a statement, Son’s agency said that the South Korean international is the “clear victim” in this case.

The statement read: “Son & Football Limited has filed a criminal complaint for blackmail against individuals who threatened the player by claiming they would spread false information.

“The police are currently investigating the matter, and we will provide updates as soon as the investigation concludes.

“We will take strong legal action against those who engaged in blackmail and intimidation based on clearly false claims.”

Son Heung-Min Stats

Since joining Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, Son has scored 173 goals in 451 appearances.

The 32-year-old made his debut away to Sunderland on 13 September that year.

His first goal for the club came just four days later. He netted twice in the Europa League against Azerbaijani side Qarabag FK.

Now captaining South Korea, he has scored 51 times in 133 caps since debuting for the senior side in December 2010.

He began his career primarily as a left winger, but is known for being exceptionally strong on his weak foot.

This has led to him being utilised on either flank, as well as through the middle as a sole striker.

Tottenham will face Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final next Wednesday in Bilbao.
