Tottenham medical staff sacked

Two members of the Tottenham medical staff have been sacked as the club continues to make major changes to their back-room team ahead of next season.

Spurs have announced a double departure, with director of performance services Adam Brett and head of sports science Nick Davies both leaving the club after just one year in their respective roles.

Having spent nearly a decade at Brighton, Brett joined Spurs at the same time as Davies arrived from West Ham after previously working with the Welsh national team.

But according to a report by football.london, the pair have been dismissed in part due to Spurs’ woeful injury record last season.

Former boss Ange Postecoglou’s side was decimated by unavailability last campaign.

The Australian manager at times had as few as 13 senior players fit.

And a number of concerning re-injuries occurred, keeping players out for long periods.

Key men Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven both suffered repetitive problems, as did Wilson Odobert, Richarlison and Ben Davies.

Tottenham Medical Staff Sacked After Injury Nightmare

Speaking during Spurs’ awful injury crisis, Postecoglou hinted that the medical staff may be under scrutiny.

He said: “I never think it’s just bad luck.

“Some of it is. I’ve never lost a goalkeeper for this period of time.

“But some of it is recurring, particularly this year in terms of guys coming back and re-injuring. It’s something we’re looking at.

“We’re always trying to explore whether we can do things better. Last year was different to this year.

“Last year it hit us across the board. This year it’s more guys that are coming back who are affected.

“Knock on wood, we’ve got a core group who are playing a lot and are getting through it ok. But it is something we are trying to address.”

Ex-Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was not happy with Tottenham’s injury problems last season.

Spurs have reviewed their medical departments over the past year.

Former head of medicine and sports science Geoff Scott left the club last summer after 20 years.

But it seems the men brought in after Scott’s departure have not delivered.

There are plans to replace both Brett and Davies. But in the meantime, new manager Thomas Frank will have right-hand man Chris Haslam joining from Brentford as head of performance.

Former Brentford boss Thomas Frank was announced as Ange Postecoglou’s successor last month.

After 11 years at the Bees, Nick Stubbings also joins Spurs as medical lead, with Tom Perryman becoming strength and conditioning coach.

Tottenham Injury Problems Amongst The Worst In The Premier League Last Season

Spurs’ injury woes were well-documented last season, and the stats back up Postecoglou’s complaints.

Of Tottenham’s 30-man squad, 23 were injured last season – the join-most in the Premier League.

A total of 186 games were missed by injured Tottenham players last season.

While this is only the fifth-most of all 20 top flight teams, Spurs would be quick to point out the importance of those players they were missing for much of the season.

Could Ski Trip Have Led To Tottenham Medical Staff Getting Sacked?

Following the news of former director of performance Adam Brett’s departure, an interesting development has emerged.

According to Tottenham insider Paul O’Keefe, Brett departed on a skiing holiday midway-through last season.

O’Keefe wrote on Twitter (now X): “Good riddance [Adam] Brett was a waste of space.

“Hope he enjoyed the Alps.”

Asked to clarify his comment, O’Keefe added: “Biggest injury crisis known to man and he f****** off on holiday mid season.”

It’s not yet clear how much truth is in these suggestions, but it would certainly be a bad look.

Tottenham Injury News

Thankfully, the new season has given Spurs a chance to reset and refresh.

Nevertheless, there remain three players currently listed as injured.

Long-term absentee Radu Dragusin in continuing his rehabilitation after an ACL reconstruction in February.

The centre-back is not expected to return to action much before the end of 2025.

Winger Dejan Kulusevski is also recoving from a major knee problem. The Swede is hoping to return in September, having missed the Europa League final after knee surgery.

And Dance Scarlett is nearing a return after having surgery to fix a groin injury that he’d been carrying all of last season.

The young forward is expected to be back in time for the majority pre-season training, with his operation timed to minimise the impact of his recovery period.
