Let it rain.
Shane van Gisbergen doesn’t mind. The NASCAR Cup Series driver believes on-track precipitation gives him an edge.
The Lap 1 rain helped Sunday as other pilots struggled at a slippery Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Van Gisbergen, however, channeled his Supercars experience and captured the Viva Mexico 250 title by 16.567 seconds over runner-up Christopher Bell.
A heavy downpour also doesn’t bother the New Zealand native much, evidenced by his 2023 Chicago Street Race victory.
Despite the rain and van Gisbergen feeling ill Sunday morning, the No. 88 Chevrolet led 60 of 100 laps at the 15-turn, 2.42-mile road course.
“I tried to treat it like when I go to Asia, just drink bottled water and be careful in the shower and brush your teeth with bottled water, but I just went downhill,” van Gisbergen said, as reported by The Associated Press. “Couldn’t keep anything in. Everything just went straight through me. I felt really queasy and my mind was there, but my body just had so much pressure in my stomach. Crazy weekend and everyone dug deep.”
Entering this weekend’s event at Pocono Raceway, William Byron leads the drivers’ standings with 604 points.
