Austin Hill, who ranks second in the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ drivers standings, earned his first Cup Series top-10 finish Sunday at Chicago Street Race.
The career highlight came after Hill placed P4 in last Saturday’s The Loop 110 as Shane van Gisbergen claimed his first of two national series events from the pole last weekend. He wasn’t satisfied with the Xfinity outcome, but the Cup finish helped compensate for it.
Starting 30th Sunday, Hill, running a limited Cup schedule for Richard Childress Racing, remained on the track for the full first stage and made his way up P9. Hill evaded the on-track accidents during the final stage and remained with the lead pack.
“It’s massive,” Hill told Jayski.com. “I was really made in the Xfinity Series finishing fourth. To finish ninth in a Cup race, I feel like I won the race.”
Hill, who is chasing circuit leader Justin Allgaier for the points lead, enters next Saturday’s event at Sonoma Raceway with three wins among nine top-five finishes in 18 Xfinity outings.
Hill reportedly has declined recent offers to run on the Cup circuit full time, but his stock continues to rise.
“I’ve always had confidence in myself that I can do this and that I can run inside the top 10 and top 15 and we proved that (Sunday).”
