NASCAR XfinitySeries’ Connor Zilisch Seeks Rematch Vs. Pit Boss/FoodMaxx 250 Favorite Shane Van Gisbergen

The NASCAR Xfinity Series rematch is set.

Pole winner Shane van Gisbergen and JR Motorsports teammate Connor Zilisch will start on the front row for Saturday’s Pit Boss/FoodMaxx 250. Insiders predict the two will continue their gritty racing from Saturday’s event Chicago Street Race, which was won by van Gisbergen as part of his national series sweep from the pole last weekend.

The fledgling rivalry between van Gisbergen and Zilisch sprouted on the Chicago concrete. On the final restart, van Gisbergen aggressively moved Zilisch along Turn 1, forcing the No. 88 Chevrolet into the wall. The rookie recovered and said after the race he learned a lesson. “By no means does he have to leave the room. I expected it, but I won’t expect it next time,” Zilisch said, as reported by NASCAR.com. “I’m not mad about it, but like I said, I just wish I could have him back. I would have done it differently.”

What would he have done?

“I was clear by a foot just before the breaking zone,” Zilisch said. “I would have taken it and not let him get to my left side (and) I wanted to be on the right side, though, exiting (Turn) 1 to be on the inside for (Turn) 2. So, yeah, live and learn.”

An 18-year-old rookie, Zilisch (+145), who drew the second-best odds to capture Saturday’s event at the 12-turn, 1.99-mile track, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, will get another crack at his teammate Saturday. Van Gisbergen (-175) was the sports-betting favorite.

During last Saturday’s event, both Zilisch, who started P35, and van Gisbergen, who fell from the lead to P19 after a bad pit call, were forced to rally from the back of the field to position themselves for the late battle.

Van Gisbergen overcame heat problems when his cool suit malfunctioned.
