They joked about the finish following Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series event at Sonoma Raceway. As Shane van Gisbergen continued his chokehold on national series road-course races, In-Season Challenge drama unfolded throughout the field.
On the final lap of the 12-turn, 1.99-mile track, Ty Dillon bumped Alex Bowman out of the $1 million competition, sealing the No. 32-ranked tournament pilot’s trip to the final four.
On the team radio moments after executing the bump-and-run, Dillon shouted: “Yeah, baby.”
“It was a rough couple of laps there,” Dillon told TNT Sports. “Alex and I race really clean. I told him, ‘Man, if it wasn’t for the million dollars, I probably wouldn’t have done that, but I had to.’
“It’s been an incredible run for this No. 10 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet team.”
To say the least.
Entering next Sunday’s non-road-course race at Dover Motor Speedway, Dillon will face No. 12-seeded John Hunter Nemechek, while No. 23 Tyler Reddick faces No. 6 Ty Gibbs.
“We’ve worked so hard for this opportunity,” said Dillon, who spoke with Bowman after the race, capped by an awkward handshake/fist pump/high-five type exchange. They smiled and walked away.
Despite his chance to win the in-race tourney, Dillon, with one top-10 and just eight laps led, ranks 31st in the drivers’ standings. William Byron (668 points) continues to lead the regular-season race, pacing Hendrick Motorsports teammates Chase Elliott (654) and Kyle Larson (624).
