To NASCAR Cup Series driver Shane van Gisbergen, Sunday’s win at Watkins Glen International was personal.
After recently losing his mother, van Gisbergen’s father, Robert, arrived for an extended visit. It was the first time father and son had been together since Christmas.
“It’s amazing,” van Gisbergen told USA after earning the Go Bowling at The Glen title. “It’s been a tough year. I have him here for next three weeks and it’s great to be able to share this with him.”
The rookie isn’t sharing the lead too often on road courses, claiming four consecutive multi-turn Cup events for the first time since Chase Elliott (2019-20).
On Sunday, van Gisbergen beat runner-up Christopher Bell by 11.116 seconds. During last season’s race at the 2.45-mile track, van Gisbergen competed as an independent and paced the field late until a mishap allowed Chris Buescher to visit Victory Lane.
“Good to get that one back,” said van Gisbergen, who became the first rookie to earn four wins. “That’s the stuff you dream about.”
