NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin feels free.

With Sunday’s win at World Wide Technology Raceway, Hamlin advanced to the Round of 12, which starts Sept. 21 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

In the meantime, Hamlin, who is chasing his first series championship, can race freely next Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway, one of his favorite tracks. He can also focus on a personal goal. With 59 career wins, the veteran is one trip to Victory Lane shy of matching Kevin Harvick’s 60 wins and entering the circuit’s top-10 all-time win list.

A four-time winner at the 0.533-mile oval, Hamlin admitted to eyeing the milestone.

“I would love to get 60 at Bristol,” Hamlin said via press release. “That would be fantastic. I’m not going to change my preparation for Bristol. All this win (at Gateway) did was just add work to the week, ‘cause it allows us to now get ahead to the next round.

“I think there’s a small group of us that have an advantage now going into next week. That’s a massive advantage.”

Chase Briscoe, Hamlin’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, won the playoff opener and also is locked into the second round. Kyle Larson (+60), Bubba Wallace (+50), Ryan Blaney (+42), William Byron (+39) and Tyler Reddick (+37) and Christopher Bell (+32) appear safe, unless they are involved in an early Josh Berry-like incident.

Austin Dillon (-11), Shane van Gisbergen (-15), Alex Bowman (-35) and Berry (-45) entered the week below the cutoff line.
