Like so many kids, LeBron James fell in love with the movie “Space Jam” starring Michael Jordan the first time he saw it. He could never have imagined that one day he would have a starring role in the animated film’s sequel almost 25 years later.

LeBron James does, in fact, star in the upcoming film, and in the age of social media, is also a big promoter of the film on his social media platforms. In April, James announced on Instagram it would be called “Space Jam: A New Legacy.” Recently, the future Hall of Famer and his company revealed the new jersey. It didn’t exactly receive the response he was expecting.

LeBron James has never been one to shy away from talking about his small-town upbringing in Akron, Ohio, and overcoming a lot of adversity. When he talks about it, it’s almost as if he still can’t believe that he’s been able to achieve so much after coming from so little. That’s the sentiment James expressed to the crew of “Space Jam 2” according to audio from the wrap party, which was leaked to TMZ in August.

“I’m gonna be honest completely with you guys — when I found out about the project, I was like it’s ‘Space Jam!’ It’s a movie that I grew up watching. People in the movie that I idolize. I was like absolutely, I gotta do it. There’s no way I can turn down ‘Space Jam!'”

“I’m just a small kid from Akron, Ohio — a very small town outside of Cleveland. From a single-parent household, I’m the only child. My mother had absolutely nothing. She was walking around high school when she was 16 years old and she was pregnant with me as a high school sophomore. So I’m really not supposed to be here.”

In the new movie, which is scheduled for release in 2021, LeBron James co-stars with Don Cheadle, Sonequa Martin-Green, and many of the Looney Tunes characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Marvin the Martian.

On August 17, the LeBron James Family Foundation Twitter page revealed the new jersey he will be wearing in the film. The jersey’s main color is turquoise and features one side with the familiar red and yellow circled background seen on all Looney Tunes movies. Tune Squad is imprinted in a dark blue cartoon-like font in the middle of the chest.

The jersey top and shorts are bordered by a strip of red trim, and both articles of clothing feature a yellow Nike Swoosh.

Whatever LeBron James touches, whether it’s on or off the court, it generally turns to gold. While his on-court success is most visible, he’s been very successful in various business ventures. “Space Jam 2” will likely be no different. It won’t, however, be a result of the Tune Squad jersey.

After the 30-second video debut featuring James in the new outfit, fans reacted. Appropriately enough, their language was quite colorful.

“LOL not too late to throw these in the garbage and start over,” wrote CBS Sports writer Pete Blackburn.

“Absolutely freaking TERRIBLE,” NFL draft scout Matt Miller said bluntly.

“This is a CRIME. Someone needs to go to jail,” wrote one television anchor in Oklahoma.

The responses weren’t all bad. Some thought it looked good, including James’ former teammate Dwyane Wade and actor Jamie Foxx. In the end, the jersey might not be a fan favorite, but the original “Space Jam” generated more than $230 million at the box office, and it wasn’t due to the jersey. Chances are, with LeBron James as the star, the sequel will likely be successful as well despite the jersey and its overpowering color scheme.
