Ja Morant has transformed the Memphis Grizzlies into a Western Conference powerhouse. After three seasons of sub-.500 play, Memphis became a dangerous team in 2020-21. It has since turned into a squad talented enough to compete for championships over the next several years.

So, since the Grizzlies have become such an exciting team, have they ever won an NBA championship? Here’s your answer.

Have the Memphis Grizzlies ever won an NBA championship?

The short answer to this question is no. The Grizzlies have never won an NBA championship. In fact, they haven’t even ever reached the NBA Finals.

However, they are one of the league’s younger franchises, so they haven’t had as many opportunities as everyone else.

The Grizzlies were an expansion team in Vancouver in 1995. But after spending six seasons in Canada in which they never had a winning percentage better than .280, they moved to Memphis in 2001 and made the playoffs for the first time in 2003-04.

The next few years were successful campaigns for the team. It made the playoffs in three consecutive seasons. However, after four losing years between 2006-07 and 2009-10, the next decade featured some of the most successful squads in the history of the franchise.

Memphis made seven consecutive postseasons between 2010-11 and 2016-17. It reached the Western Conference semifinals three times and the conference finals once in 2012-13.

That 2012-13 team went 56-26 in the regular season with guys like Marc Gasol, Mike Coley, and Zach Randolph. After beating the Los Angeles Clippers 4-2 and the Oklahoma City Thunder 4-1, the Grizzlies lost to the San Antonio Spurs 4-0 in their only ever trip to the series.

The 2016-17 campaign was the last season Memphis made the playoffs with Gasol, Conley, and Randolph. The team then struggled the next couple of years before drafting Ja Morant No. 2 overall in 2019.

Ja Morant Turned a Painful Childhood Experience Into an On-Court Advantage

The Grizzlies still had a losing record with Ja Morant in 2019-20, but everyone could see their potential. They have since become one of the league’s top teams, making the playoffs the last two seasons and finishing second in the Western Conference in 2021-22 with a 56-26 record.

Memphis has a ton of youth, led by Morant, who won the 2021-22 Most Improved Player award with 27.4 points and 6.7 assists per game at 22 years old. It also has Dillon Brooks (26), Jaren Jackson Jr. (22), and one of the NBA’s best shooters in Desmond Bane (23).

Will the Grizzlies win an NBA championship in 2022 or even 2023? That’s hard to say, but they are certainly set up for years of success with Morant and their tremendous young core.
