After Grueling Singles Win Over Anna Kalinskaya, Jessica Pegula Is Injured In Doubles Match

Jessica Pegula continues to pull double duty. On Sunday, she won a grueling three-set match over Anna Kalinskaya. It was physical and long, and Pegula had to come back after losing the first set. Two of the three sets were decided by tiebreakers.
World no. 4 Jess Pegula 🇺🇸 comes back from a set down to beat Anna Kalinskaya 6(3)-7 6-2 7-6(2). Not much separating the two, as both played at a high level behind their serve. They exchanged holds all the way to the tiebreak, where Jess played more attack minded. Was a fun… pic.twitter.com/jusmjBB9yc

After suitable rest, Pegula and doubles partner Ashlyn Krueger took the court be it only briefly. Pegula suffered a thigh injury, and the pair retired in the first set with a 3-1 lead.
Pegula is due on court tomorrow to play the Round of 16 match against Marta Kostyuk at around 3:40 PM EDT.

It is unclear how severe the injury is or if the retirement was out of an abundance of caution. Kreuger is still alive in singles and is also on court tomorrow for her Round of 16 match against Qinwen Zheng at around 1 PM EDT.
The Perils Of Playing Singles and Doubles
There are a lot of heated discussions about doubles, and like it or not, singles players teaming up for doubles is a crowd-pleaser. For the players, participating in doubles is a fun way to help them to stay match-ready instead of traditional practice. It also helps them adjust to the balls and tournament conditions in a match setting.
Fans and some other players get upset if singles players opt out of doubles in the latter stages of a tournament to preserve their bodies for singles. Jessica Pegula did not do that after a long match. If she opted to do so, it would have been understandable.
At this point, we hope to see Pegula feeling and moving well on the court tomorrow against Kostyuk, but time will tell.
