At Michigan State, Brian Hoyer saw limited playing time his first two seasons with the Spartans. That changed his junior season in 2007 when he was named the starter.
Hoyer started all 13 games that year at Michigan State where he completed 223-of-376 passes for 2,725 yards, including 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He received honorable mention All-Big Ten honors.
During his senior season, despite being named to the preseason list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, Hoyer’s level of success waned as he finished the season completing 180-of-353 for 2,404 yards. He had nine touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Hoyer has survived as an NFL journeyman quarterback
While Brian Hoyer was invited to the NFL scouting combine, he went undrafted in the 2009 NFL Draft. He signed a free-agent contract with the New England Patriots, where he would serve as a backup behind Tom Brady for three seasons, appearing in 13 games during that time.
After a season in Arizona, where he made his first NFL start, Hoyer joined the Cleveland Browns in 2013. He played two seasons for the Browns, including the most productive season of his NFL career in 2014 when he made 13 starts. He finished that season with a 7-6 record, which included throwing 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
Since 2015, Hoyer has been one of the most nomadic quarterbacks in the NFL, playing for seven teams during that time frame, including twice with the Patriots. Over the course of his 11 seasons, he’s compiled a 16-22 record.
