Where was this last round? That’s what NASCAR Cup Series driver Josh Berry must have wondered following Sunday’s Round of 12-opening runner-up finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
During the three-race first round, Barry endured three consecutive last-place finishes. Bounced from the playoffs, the No. 21 Ford team is positioned to continue playing spoiler.
If Cody Ware didn’t go out of his way to detour Austin Dillon on Lap 254, bringing out an unwanted caution, Wood Brothers Racing could be celebrating a rare trip to Victory Lane. The long-standing organization, which posted win No. 100 last season with Harrison Burton driving, has collected just five wins since 2001.
“Our long run seemed really strong, so I think it could have gone a couple different ways,” Berry told Fox Sports. “It was a grind for sure, but we had a really good car and we just chipped away at it.
“We just kept putting four on it and kept moving forward and did it the old-fashioned way. It was a lot of fun.”
Ryan Blaney, Sunday’s Mobil 1 301 titleholder, qualified for the Round of 8. No. 8-ranked Chase Briscoe paces Ross Chastain by 12 points, Austin Cindric by 19 points, Tyler Reddick by 23 and Bubba Wallace by 27.
