Miami Open: Taylor Fritz Wins Grueling Quarterfinal Match Over Matteo Berrettini On 7th Match Point

The quality of tennis in the Miami Open quarterfinal match between Taylor Fritz and Matteo Berrettini was top-notch and worthy of a final. The pair dueled for approximately 2 1/2 hours for the last semifinal spot.
It was Fritz who prevailed and will meet a well-rested Jakub Mensik, who had a straight set win early in the day. That semifinal match will be less than 24 hours after this physical and mental grind concluded on 7 PM EDT on Friday.
Berrettini and Fritz held firm control of their service games after exchanging breaks in the opening of the match. The long rallies tended to go Fritz’s way, but Berrettini was finding his way in those later in the match.
Taylor Fritz Had 6 Match Points In The Second Set
The storyline of the match was Taylor Fritz’s perseverance. He had six match points in the second set. When those drifted away and the third set began, Fritz had a poker face and got to work. He had to be seething over his missed opportunities, but it did not show.
Berrettini saves SIX MATCH POINTS and converts his FIRST SET POINT to take the 2nd set.

Over one hour after his sixth match point, Fritz converted on the seventh one. His immediate reaction was to let out a guttural roar.
Fritz greeted Berrettini at the net with a smile. He knew that either one of them could have won. For Berrettini, he should not be too disappointed. He showed his grit and fought to stay in this match and the tournament, evidenced by his gutsy win over Alex de Minaur two days ago. He was down plenty but never out; he kept fighting.
The better news is that he looks healthy, which leads fans to believe the former Wimbledon finalist will be ready for the grass season.
Just hoping Berrettini stays fit.
When healthy his level is still right on top of the game. Can play on every surface, good Slam player as well.
