NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series third-year driver William Sawalich wants to be an original.

The Minnesota native wants to be the first from the North Star State to win national series event. Minnesota has one “pavement oval,” which is located in Elko and where Sawalich groomed his skills as a youngster.

If (or when) the 18-year-old prospect does visit Victory Lane, he knows who one of the first individuals he would want to thank first: Dennis Setzer.

Considered a rookie on the Xfinity Series, Sawalich compiled 19 Truck events over the past three seasons. To pursue his racing dreams, he moved to North Carolina in 2021 and started working with his mentor.

Setzer competed on the Cup, Xfinity, and Truck series during his 17-year career (1991-2012). The Newton, North Carolina, native claimed 18 Truck and two Xfinity titles.

“(The Setzers) started me off in late models, and late models were an important part of my career,” Sawalich told NASCAR.com. “I can’t thank them enough for basically teaching me how to race.”

Sawalich proved to be a quick learner, winning 43 percent of the ARCA Menards Series races he entered. He captured the ARCA East championships in 2023-24.

“From his first time in the car, he showed incredible speed at just 14 years old,” said Brandon Setzer, crew chief and driver coach at Setzer Racing and Development. “Speed came naturally for him, and he was always open to advice on how to be better.”

With the Xfinity series idle this weekend, Sawalich will not compete in his fourth Truck race this season. Instead, he will compete in the ARCA Menards Series’ Tide 150 on Friday night. Truck Series points leader Corey Heim (+150) drew the top sports-betting odds to win Saturday’s Heart of Health Care, according to BetOnline Sportsbook.
