Joey Logano endured a start to the defense of his third NASCAR Cup Series championship that he would like to drive away from.

During the opening 10 races, Logano failed to log a top-five finish, developing into the first reigning champ to go about three months with only finishes outside the top six. The skid ended Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway after Logano passed Michael McDowell with four laps to go and utilized a strong overtime restart to claim his 37th career race title, equaling Bobby Isaac for 23rd on the circuit’s all-time wins list.

Logano withstood 12 caution periods, including seven during the third stage, to qualify for the postseason. He won after starting 27th.

“The sport changes so quickly,” Logano said, as reported by NBC Sports. “It is crazy how you can just ride these roller coasters.

“The car was fast …. I just did a poor job qualifying. We just were grinding it out, a couple here and a couple there and eventually we get the win. It is nice to get one, really nice.”

The black hat fit.
