Tyler Reddick found a way to do something few NASCAR Cup Series drivers were able to do this season: beat Shane van Gisbergen during a competition outside of oval racing.
Completing a hot qualifying lap at 95.510 mph at Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course, Reddick earned the pole position for Sunday’s Bank of America ROVAL 400. A three-time Supercars champion, Van Gisbergen claimed the Cup Series’ past four road course events, but was edged out Saturday by 0.032 seconds.
Reddick was able to earn the inside of the front row starting position despite his young son admitted to a hospital with a heart issue.
Entering the Round of 12 finale, Reddick, ranked No. 11, remains 29 points below the cutoff line. Van Gisbergen was eliminated following the opening round of the playoffs. Reddick, who earned the 2023 ROVAL pole, claimed three road course wins after the circuit transitioned to the Gen 7 machine in 2022.
AJ Allmendinger paced the field in practice, turning the top lap at 94.748 mph.

NASCAR Mourns Passing Of Grant Lynch
Grant Lynch, who spearheaded racing at Talladega Superspeedway for more than a quarter century, died Thursday. He was 71.
Lynch served as chairman and president of the iconic 2.66-mile track from 1993-2019. He retired after Talladega celebrated its 50th anniversary.
Honored with the Buddy Shuman Award, Lynch was known to help grow the sport of stock car racing.
“Quite frankly, in my opinion, this is the most exciting race track in the world,” Lynch told The Associated Press during a 1998 interview. “You see guys here racing side by side, lap after lap. Nobody in the stands sits down.”
