NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Jake Garcia needed extra help to break the stranglehold regular-season champion Corey Heim has had on the circuit recently.
Garcia on Thursday turned a hot qualifying lap of 125.831 mph at Bristol Motor Speedway, earning the pole position for the evening’s running of the UNOH 250 presented by Ohio Logistics. In the playoffs for the first time, Garcia edged Heim by 0.042 seconds. Heim, who visited Victory Lane for three straight outings, captured four of the previous five poles.
Garcia told Fox Sports the No. 13 Ford was off during the afternoon’s practice session. That’s when his team went to work.
“We started off in practice really far off,” said Garcia, who earned his third career start on the inside of the front row this season. “We made adjustments and got it better and better.
“Hopefully, we can keep it up there in the race tonight.”
Garcia enters the second of three Round of 10 races ranked No. 8 among playoff pilots, two points ahead of Chandler Smith and seven in front of Kaden Honeycutt. Smith qualified P8 and Honeycutt P4.
“It’s a good time to get our third pole of year,” said Garcia, who seeks his first circuit win.

Patrick Emerling Returning To Spire Motorsports
Spire Motorsports announced Wednesday that short-track ace Patrick Emerling will command the No. 7 Chevrolet during the Sept. 20 event at New Hampshire International Speedway.
A nine-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race winner, Emerling participated in eight Xfinity Series events this season, posting a top-10 finish.
Entering his fifth career Truck Series race, Emerling previously raced for Spire at Pocono in June, registering a P15. In nine Modified Tour starts at New Hampshire, Emerling posted nine top-five finishes at the 1.058-mile oval.
