With a week off to reflect on his top positioning in the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ playoff standings, regular-season champion Connor Zilisch was forced to remind himself that a fifth-place finish last Thursday night at Bristol Motor Speedway was not a poor showing.
But after winning four straight races and seven of eight, even teenage rookies can take things for granted when momentum is right. Zilisch, who outdueled Sam Mayer and JR Motorsports teammate Justin Allgaier for the Stage 2 win, remained in front for 34 laps until deciding to pit on Lap 300 for four tires. Eight drivers, however, remained on the track, including eventual winner Aric Almirola.
Zilisch didn’t celebrate in Victory Lane, which must have felt strange for him, but the 19-year-old posted his 15th consecutive top-five finish.
“Yea, we’re sitting in a pretty good spot,” Zilisch said, via press release.
Zilisch (-110) tops the postseason standings with 85 points and drew the top odds to earn the circuit title, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Sheldon Creed Staying In Title Chase
Driver Sheldon Creed overcame a pit-road penalty to place P2 last Friday night at Bristol. The No. 00 Ford driver rallied from P24 at the end of Stage 1 to post his 15th career runner-up finish.
The 2020 Truck Series champion has yet to win an Xfinity race.
“It was a good rebound,” Creed said. “I stumped us early and then just rallied back all night. To come out with a top-three finish and up on points is all you can ask for in an opening round.”
Creed, who drew +3000 title odds, ranks No. 7 in the playoff standings, seven points above the cutoff line. Nicholas Sanchez and Jesse Love are tied, three points behind No. 8-ranked Taylor Gray.
