After finishing second to JR Motorsports teammate Connor Zilisch for the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ regular-season championship, reigning titleholder Justin Allgaier remains confident in his bid to match Tyler Reddick’s back-to-back feat.
With three wins, Allgaier is one of three circuit pilots to visit Victory Lane more than once this season. But, after a strong first half, Allgaier has not won since Nashville in June. As the series progresses into the first postseason event at Bristol Motor Speedway on Friday, Allgaier remains confident. Reddick is the last circuit driver to win consecutive Xfinity championships (2018 and ‘19).
Allgaier said the “pressure” is off because he won last year. Still, he believes the No. 7 Chevrolet team can shake off its second-half victory slump.
“I think for us it’s just a matter of executing, we’ve had the speed,” he said via press release. “I could look back at the last couple of months and say, ‘coulda … woulda … shoulda,’ but we had the car to beat, we just got caught up in someone else’s mess or made mistakes on our own.”
Allgaier’s JR Motorsports teammate, Justin Zilisch continues to dominate the circuit, closing out the regular season with four consecutive trips to Victory Lane. With nine wins, Zilisch (+100) remains the sports-betting favorite to earn his first series title. Entering his 10th postseason, Allgaier (+230) drew the second-best odds, according to BetOnline Sportsbook.
“One thing I love is they’ve had success,” Allgaier said of Zilisch’s No. 88 Chevrolet team. “As a company, we’re still winning. I’m hoping once these playoffs start, we can do a better job.”
"I honestly don't know that it gives me any advantage."
