Xfinity post Phoenix odds story (1)

At the venue of his NASCAR Xfinity Series championship coronation last November, Justin Allgaier appeared to be cruising to a win during Saturday’s GOVX 200 at Phoenix Raceway. A poor overtime start, however, led to a fifth-place finish behind winner Aric Almirola outdueled Cup Series regular Alex Bowman along the final turn.

The leader for 130 laps at the one-mile tri-oval, Allgaier steered the No. 7 Chevrolet to a more than one-second lead during the closing rotations, until Nick Leitz’s crash on Lap 197 created the two-lap extra session.

Phoenix is a track Allgaier should look forward to competing at, but there have been incidents like last spring when a commanding performance melted away late in the winter event last season. He has compiled 730 laps led at Phoenix.

“I mean, I want to love this place,” Allgaier said, as reported by NASCAR.com. “I mean, I won a championship here. We’ve won races here. We’ve done all the right things here. I really want to love it, but it’s like golf. You’re one hole away from throwing your clubs in the water, and you hit a great approach shot to the green, and you’re like, ‘This is the greatest game in the world,’ right?

“Racing is the same way, and this race track is the same way. You come back here every time, thinking you’re going to do it differently or you’re going to do it better, or you’re going to do whatever, and stuff like that happens. So we have a running joke that, as the 7 team, we don’t make it easy. And Phoenix is the 7 car of the schedule right now for us.”

Almirola beat Bowman by 0.045 seconds.
