Seattle Seahawks v Atlanta Falcons

Russell Wilson somehow doesn’t have an NFL MVP award to his name. Well, that might be changing this year.

Wilson started his 2020-21 campaign in dazzling fashion, throwing for 322 yards and four touchdowns Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons in his season debut. Not many fans considered the Seattle Seahawks to be one of the top Super Bowl contenders this year, but Wilson just proved them wrong in emphatic fashion.

It might be early, but Wilson might already be the frontrunner to win the 2020-21 NFL MVP award. Wilson was surgical in his season debut, throwing for 322 yards and four touchdowns on 31/35 passing. The QB also ran three times for 29 yards.

Behind his impressive performance, Wilson led the Seahawks to a 38-25 win over the Falcons in week one. The 38 points Wilson put up were the second-highest in the NFL this week.

Wilson only had four incompletions in the week one win, but amazingly, he would’ve been perfect if he never targeted WR D.J. Metcalf on Sunday. Wilson was 4-8 targeting Metcalf against the Falcons, but he was a perfect 27-27 for 227 yards going to his other receiving targets.

Wilson has been one of the best and most consistent quarterbacks in the league since his debut in 2012. In eight seasons as a pro, Wilson has an 86-41-1 record, six Pro Bowl appearances, and a Super Bowl ring. The one thing he doesn’t have? An NFL MVP award.

Wilson has led the Seahawks to 10 or more wins in seven of his eight seasons with the team. He led Seattle to a playoff appearance in all but one year with the Seahawks, but Wilson still doesn’t get the credit he’s deserved.

Wilson would’ve been a worthy MVP winner in more than one season over his career, but he still hasn’t gotten his hands on the elusive trophy. The QB would much rather have another Super Bowl ring in front of a first MVP award, but he could be gunning for both in 2020-21.

Not only has Wilson never won an MVP award during his illustrious career. He hasn’t even received a single MVP vote in his eight-year NFL career, which is one of the biggest travesties in the league over the past decade.

Well, maybe Wilson is finally fed up with the disrespect. He responded by playing a near-perfect football game to kick off the 2020-21 season, and he put the rest of the NFL on notice in the process.

Wilson and the Seahawks are constantly overlooked as Super Bowl contenders, but Wilson is making a statement early on in the year that Seattle is a real threat to win another Lombardi Trophy.

You wouldn’t think Wilson could get any better at this sport, but he’s already proving through one week he’s still one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and he’ll be gunning for his much deserved first MVP award and a second Super Bowl this year.
