Marc Andre ter Stegen, Pictured Waving Here, Is a Transfer Target for Man Utd and Chelsea

Premier League clubs Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly keen on signing Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Their interest has reportedly intensified after Barcelona signed 24-year-old goalkeeper Joan Garcia for €25 million (£21.4 million).

Interestingly, German legend Lothar Matthaus has tipped Manchester City to join the race, claiming Ter Stegen is an upgrade over Ederson.

After Ter Stegen suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in September 2024, Barcelona managed to bring Wojciech Szczesny out of retirement. From January 2025, he started serving as Barca’s first-choice goalkeeper and earned plaudits for his performances. With his help, the Blaugrana secured the LaLiga title, the Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa de Espana.

Ter Stegen returned to action in May, but Szczesny got the nod over him in three of five LaLiga matches. Ter Stegen’s stock has depleted further this month, with highly rated Garcia joining Hansi Flick’s squad. Garcia’s arrival suggests 33-year-old Ter Stegen may very well be on borrowed time in Catalonia.

Man Utd and Chelsea Intensify Pursuit of Barcelona Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes.net, Man Utd and Chelsea are eager to capitalise on Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s situation at Barcelona.

Andre Onana endured a campaign to forget as Man Utd finished 15th in the Premier League last season. The former Inter Milan goalkeeper’s lacklustre showings have pushed the board to consider new alternatives between the sticks. Ter Stegen’s big-game experience and ball-playing ability have helped him emerge as a strong candidate for the position.

Chelsea have also been struggling with the goalkeeping position. Coach Enzo Maresca is reportedly seeking a goalkeeper with leadership qualities and invaluable experience. He believes adding a goalkeeper of such profile would help them in their pursuit of Champions League glory in 2025/26.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have not talked about a reshuffling in goal, but they would welcome a move for Ter Stegen. With them reportedly agreeing personal terms with Nico Williams and eyeing reinforcements in midfield and defence, an injection of funds is of paramount importance. The German goalkeeper earns around £103,000 per week at Camp Nou and has three years remaining on his deal.

If Man Utd or Chelsea table a suitable offer, Barca would not hesitate to green light the move for Ter Stegen. They could potentially use the funds to prepare another bid for Luis Diaz after Liverpool rejected the first one.

Lothar Matthaus Urges Man City to Go After Barcelona Veteran Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Following Barcelona’s move for Joan Garcia, Marc-Andre ter Stegen has unofficially become surplus to requirements. Spanish media points towards a possible departure for Ter Stegen, and Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has backed Man City to pounce.

Writing in his Sky Germany column, Matthaus reasoned (via GOAL):

Six English clubs will be playing there next season, and none of them have a goalkeeper strong enough to say, ‘Ter Stegen wouldn’t be a reinforcement for us.’ I don’t know what Manchester City’s plans are, but I think they’re not too happy with Ederson. I think ter Stegen could definitely be a goalkeeper for the Citizens for the next three or four years.”

Ter Stegen joined Barcelona from Borussia Monchengladbach in July 2014. He has since played 422 games for the Catalan giants, keeping 175 clean sheets. Ter Stegen has helped Barca to six LaLiga titles and a UEFA Champions League trophy among other honours. If he can keep himself fit, he could indeed be an excellent addition to Man City.
