The John and Thady Gosden-trained Ombudsman was one of the stars of Royal Ascot this season and horse racing fans will see him next at Sandown on Saturday – but does the Godolphin-owned 4 year-old tick the key Coral Eclipse trends? Or are there any standout stats to take him on with?
Ombudsman will take on just five other Coral-Eclipse runners. Including French Derby winner Camille Pissarro, 2000 Guineas victor Ruling Court, the Ryan Moore-ridden Delacroix and top French middle-distance performer Sosie.
The Coral Eclipse Trends Suggest Ombudsman Ticks A Lot Of Boxes
Before the recent Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, the betting suggested that Godolphin’s Ombudsman only had a ‘squeak’ – priced at 7/1 with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK.
With four horses shorter in the market – including the hot favourite Los Angeles.
However, after the race those odds looked all wrong as Ombudsman, under jockey William Buick, won showing a great turn-of-foot to see off last season’s Champion Stakes winner and 123-rated Anmaat by an easy two lengths.
As at result, the Ombudsman official rating shot up from 117 to a new mark of 128.
And this time the layers are taking no chances on him in the Coral-Eclipse – making him the clear favourite in the market.
He’s now won five of his six career starts, with his only defeat coming in his season’s Brigadier Gerard Stakes in May (more on that below).
So, heading into the Group One Coral-Eclipse, we know the betting is telling us Ombudsman is the one to beat.
But does he also tick the key Coral- Eclipse trends?
Key Ombudsman Coral Eclipse Stats
- ✅- 23/23 (100%) winners aged 5 or younger (Ombudsman is aged 4)
- ✅- 19/20 (95%) from the top 4 in the betting (Ombudsman will be the likely fav)
- ✅- 17/20 – (85%) had won over at least 1m2f (Ombudsman has won 4 times over 1m2f)

- ✅- Godolphin have won the Coral-Eclipse six times (Ombudsman is owned by Godolphin)
So, as you can see from the above Coral Eclipse trends – Ombudsman has a lot going for him.

While he’s also trained by John Gosden, who has won this prize four times, and also owned by six-time winners of the race Godolphin.

Are There ANY Coral Eclipse Trends To Take Ombudsman On With?
Okay, so we know there are a stack of Coral Eclipse trends in Ombudsman’s favour.
But for anyone looking elsewhere for the winner – is there anything to cling to?
❌- 1/12 (8%) winners aged 4
❌- Only career defeat came at Sandown
In short, there’s not a lot to go on here.
But some might look to his age. Yes, ALL winners of this Sandown Group One since 1886 have been 5 or younger – so that’s a plus for this 4 year-old.
However, in recent times not many 4 year-olds have won.
The last four runnings ALL went to a 3 year-old, while the only 4 year-old to win since 2013 was Ulysses in 2017.
Don’t forget the 3 year-olds get a handy age allowance from the older horses here – 10lbs.
Meaning Ombudsman will have to give a fair chunk of weight away to some useful sorts – including this year’s French Derby winner Camille Pissarro.
While others might look at his only career loss coming here at Sandown as another negative to cling to.

Who Was The Last French-Trained Coral-Eclipse Winner As Sosie Could Run?
We’ll also see a top French raider taking on Ombudsman in Sosie.
This three-time Group One winner in France has returned this season in tip-top form – winning the Prix Ganay and Prix d’Ispahan (watch below) at Longchamp.
But how have the French fared in the Eclipse?
Their last winner wasn’t that long ago – when Vadeni won in 2022 for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget.
However, prior to that success you have to go back to 1959 to find the last French winner – when Alec Head trained Saint Crespin to victory.
