Diogo Jota Tributes

Heartfelt tributes have been pouring in for Liverpool’s Diogo Jota after news of the Portuguese international’s death in a car accident alongside his brother, Andre Silva.

Twenty-eight-year-old Jota and his brother were both killed in the accident, which happened in Zamora, Spain.

Andre Silva, 26, was also a professional footballer who played for Portuguese club Penafiel.

According to reports, the pair’s car left the road due to a tyre blowout before catching fire.

Jota and long-term partner Rute Cardoso were married only last month. The couple had three children together.

In addition to helping Liverpool win the Premier League title last season, Jota also played for Portugal as they defeated Spain in last month’s Nations League final.

In a statement, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said: “The FPF and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated.

“Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 international appearances, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.

“We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and Andre Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything to honour their legacy daily.”
