Future Open Golf Venues

Golf fans are starting to lick their lips as the 153rd Open Championship tees-off on Thursday 17th July, with Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland staging the 2025 event. However, as soon as this season’s final major of the season is over – people will be looking to see which courses are the future Open golf venues in 2026 and 2027.

Royal Portrush To Stage The 2025 Open Championship For Only The Third Time

The final golf major of the 2025 season will see the Open Championship heading to Northern Ireland, with Royal Portrush staging the 153rd Open.

It will be the third time Royal Portrush have played hosts to the oldest major.

They staged the event for the first time back in 1951 – which was also the first time the tournament was held outside Great Britain.

While more recently Royal Portrush entertained in 2019 – the 148th renewal, when they replaced their old 17th and 18th holes to make more room for spectators and hospitality.

England’s Max Faulkner won the 1951 Open at Royal Portrush and Ireland’s Shane Lowry landed the 2019 running after seeing off Tommy Fleetwood by six strokes.

Rory McIlroy Shot a 61 At Royal Portrush Aged 16, But Missed The Cut There In 2019

Ahead of the Open Championship date in 2025, a lot of the focus will be on world number two Rory McIlroy, who will be eager to win the event in his homeland.

McIlroy also famously shot a 61 at the course aged 16 as an amateur in 2005.

However, the last time it was held at Royal Portrush in 2019, McIlroy missed the cut after a shocking opening round of 79 (8 over).

With his day one round book-ended with a quadruple-bogey on the first hole and triple-bogey on the 18th.

The Next Future Open Golf Venue Will Be Royal Birkdale

If we fast-forward to 2026, the next course to host the Open will be Royal Birkdale in Merseyside, England.

With the four-day tournament running from Thursday 16th to Sunday 19th July 2026.

The Open was last held at Royal Birkdale in 2017 when America’s Jordan Spieth lifted the Claret Jug – beating Matt Kuchar by three shots.

Before 2017, the 2008 Open at Royal Birkdale saw Irishman Padraig Harrington win.

That victory remains the most recent back-to-back Open Championship win, with Harrington also winning in 2007.
